Down with Love - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Down with Love is an American romantic comedy motion picture released in the United States on May 9, 2003.
While the plot reflects the attitudes and behaviour of the pre-sexual revolution early sixties, the film has an anachronistic subtext informed by more modern, post-feminist ideas and attitudes; the script mixing early 21st Century ideas with the type of light-hearted banter that dominated films of the early 1960s.
Down with Love is the story of Barbara Novak (Zellweger), a farm girl from Maine, who finds fame and fortune as the author of 'Down With Love', a book that tells women to become liberated and free from male domination by giving up on love and substituting chocolate for physical pleasure.

The early '60s romantic comedies of Doris Day and Rock Hudson are fondly teased in "Down With Love," Peyton Reed's pastel-colored skirmish in the battle of the sexes.
In it, she proposes a "no" to romance and a "yes" to careers for women, as well as the then-outlandish concept that women should adapt the same sex-for-sex's sake attitudes of men.
Indeed, "Down With Love" gets the style and flavor absolutely right, and the script by Eve Ahlert and Dennis Drake features all the wit, innuendo, contrivances and conveniences to match its famous precursors.

Down With Love is a romantic comedy in the vein of the wholesome Doris Day Rock Hudson films.
As an exercise in nostalgia, the tone and look of Down With Love possesses a novelty aspect, but audiences now are more sophisticated and the titillating innuendo that was once considered risqué back in Day and Hudson's time, now appears twee and childish, even when more explicit as it is here.
Set in Manhattan during the swinging 60s, Down With Love captures the breezy style of films of the period, from its animated Saul Bass-esque titles, to its bright Technicolor look, to its use of back projection.

Down with Love serves up a buffet of cleverness and history; its giddy enthusiasm for the time period is similar to that of Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can.
On the surface, it’s formula-driven fluff, but what makes Down with Love work so well is the affection the cast and their director, Peyton Reed (Bring It On), have for the material and its bounty of ideas.

Proclaiming that love is little more than an unwelcome distraction, Barbara calls for women to ditch their relationships and pursue sex like men do - a la carte - exactly what they want, exactly when they want it.

All in all Down with Love is pure candyfloss - a sugary sweet romp through a pair of rose tinted glasses that provides a refreshingly welcome change of pace after a summer of big action blockbusters.
