Downbeat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In music performance and music theory, the "downbeat" is also the first beat of a measure in music.
In modern music, using common time (4/4), emphasis is usually placed on the third beat or on the back beat, whereas emphasis is rarely put on the downbeat first beat, though a notable exception is in funk where George Clinton dubbed this type of beat "The One".
"Downbeat" is another name for the musical genre also called downtempo, lounge, Trip Hop or chillout.

Duke Ellington - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Barney Bigard, formerly a member of King Oliver's band, was a master of New Orleans jazz clarinet and stayed with the band for twelve years.
Harry Carney was one of the original innovators of the baritone saxophone, winning each Downbeat magazine poll until the arrival of Gerry Mulligan.
Carney, who also pioneered circular breathing, was the longest lasting member of the orchestra, joining in 1927 and remaining with the group until his death in 1974 (just several months after Ellington's).

 CD Baby: DOWNBEAT SWITCH: Seconds
Downbeat Switch began to play small local gigs, opening acts and open mic nights, all the while recording rough demo sessions in the basement.
Downbeat Switch decided it was time to risk the $150 ticket from the cops, and move back to the guitarist/vocalist's house.
Downbeat Switch can also be heard on the Y101(101.1) and 102.1X Richmond's local Rock Shows on Sunday evenings at 7:00pm and 8:00pm and then from 9:00pm to 10:00pm.

 SNWMF 2004 - Performing Artist
In addition to this large and varied supply of top-ranking live performers, Downbeat was also known to possess a deep box of "dubplates," exclusive recordings cut by artists for Downbeat alone to play.
Downbeat, with its potent dub box, was handsomely prepared for this new era, but did not entirely abandon its foundation in live performances.
Instead, Downbeat maintains what is quite possibly the deepest, heaviest collection of exclusive foundation dubplates in the world, a record box only rivaled by a small handful of other long-established sounds.

 Downbeat Magazine Reviews at Shopping.com
The jazz revival of the 1990s is looking to have been relatively short-term, undermined partially by the current chaos in the recording industry, partially by its own partisanship, and partially by the general sad state of affairs in the world of music and cultural education.
Once populated by artists who most listeners would intuitively peg as jazz, the magazine has started to feature more and more “jam bands” and representatives of various other genres which, while maintaining a core of improvisation to a greater or lesser degree, are usually regarded as their own entities or representatives of other styles.
In the final analysis, Downbeat is still a force to be reckoned with in jazz journalism and criticism, but given its recent shift in focus, to say nothing of its high subscription rates (US $30/year), I can recommend it only with reservations.

Heartbeat Records - Downbeat the Ruler: Killer Instrumentals from Studio One - Album Detail
For over 50 years until his recent death, Dodd ruled over the Jamaican music scene by the very force of his personality, and by the breadth of his musical accomplishments.
Downbeat the Ruler is filled with the instrumentals that galvanized the public, and brought the label to the top of its popularity.
Other producers, unable to compete against this onslaught, began to copy these instrumentals for their own usage and a new profession was born, the copy-cat.

Downbeat is a generic term sometimes used to replace ambient-house and ambient-techno, considering that the amount and complexity of electronic listening music described under the "ambient" umbrella had made the terms practically useless by the mid-'90s.
It often implies the use of moderate breakbeats instead of the steady four-four beats of most ambient-house or ambient-techno.
In its widest possible definition, downbeat is any form of electronic music created for the living room instead of the dance floor.

 Downbeat = Sucks?
For ages, I've been a champion of Downbeat, that slow methodical sub-genre of dance music so epitomised by acts like Zero 7 and Bent.
For some reason, however, the flood of sophomoric releases by some of my favourite downbeat merchants has made me question my love of the sub-genre in the first place.
Maybe, like punk, Downbeat was a movement of a specific time and that time has come and gone or maybe I was fooling myself that these albums were worth listening to in the first place.

Downbeat Critics Poll results - Jazz Bulletin Board
I noted the Billy Taylor quote on this site sometime last week where he commented on what a good thing it is that so many new jazz artists are bringing new and fresh perspectives to the music.
Based on the Downbeat poll, it seems there exists a stong propensity to embrace the familiar and a reluctance to accept the inevitability of change.
I also wonder if the down beat polls were taken more seriously years ago, or if they were always greeted with indifference.
