Topic: Downbeat Crowd

  No 1 Station Live
The crowd starts to come forward in two's and three's swaying and rolling their shoulders (they will be dancing uncontrollably any minute).
The crowd erupts as the band begin the first few beats of the Upsetters classic "Return of Django" which is quickly pulled up and re-started; this time adding the lyrics of "Oh Babe (Sick And Tired)".
I found this the weakest moment of the set as they appeared lost in the dub, playing their own impromptu pieces, but the audience don't seem to notice as they are already hooked and Marcus is reeling them in with total confidence, he's the bands front man and he's in control.

When the crowd does not respond by dancing, some bands seems to think they can create energy by speeding up the beat, and when that fails, having the bass player emulate sex with his instrument.
The Downbeat article, appearing in a jazz magazine, referred to the dancers moving on the floor but naturally did not deal with the danceability of the music and how it relates to dance.
We hope that Downbeat will cover these swing bands on a regular basis, and review individual bands and individual cuts, and bring in the perspective of swing dancers in their reviews.

I Am Kloot - Atomicduster Live Review
The crowd were certainly appreciative of “Untitled #1” and “Mermen”, and Johnny’s vocals remind me of something of a hybrid of John Lennon and a Liam Gallagher drawl but he seemed to pull it off.
The set consisted of the usual downbeat songs but the whole thing was moved along nicely by the drummers rhythm pushes, and that created a nice overall feel.
Unfortunately the crowd was of the typical Leicester standard, taking the form of still silhouettes, captured in the lights that emanated from the stage.

 S.F. scene report
So far, the super-stylish crowd has been somewhat sparse, and more focused on the bar than the dance floor, but it looks like it could soon be picking up where Goldies on Friday's left off.
The cramped dancefloor hosts a funky mixed crowd with a strong dose of European accents (no surprise, given the venue), and the vibe is terrific - even prompting some warm fuzzy handholding circles on the last tune of the night.
The Friday crowd veers dangerously towards weekend warrior types, and the music is of the something-for-everyone variety, with all rooms open and music ranging from Hip Hop to Deep House.

 SNWMF 2004 - Performing Artist
In addition to this large and varied supply of top-ranking live performers, Downbeat was also known to possess a deep box of "dubplates," exclusive recordings cut by artists for Downbeat alone to play.
Downbeat, with its potent dub box, was handsomely prepared for this new era, but did not entirely abandon its foundation in live performances.
Instead, Downbeat maintains what is quite possibly the deepest, heaviest collection of exclusive foundation dubplates in the world, a record box only rivaled by a small handful of other long-established sounds.

The crowd becomes excited when the first few notes of their next song emerge from the amplifiers.

Lerche was sitting in the catbird seat with reams of new material, a new band, and newfound confidence as he played to a sold-out crowd at Martyr’s.
The crowd favorite “Dead Passengers” had the album version’s theremin solo replaced by a decidedly Stevie Ray Vaughn—esque guitar solo, turning the already great song into quite a barnburner.
Lerche performed an extended encore, with crowd favorites like “Sleep on Needles,” which featured an emphasized drum line, and “Modern Nature,” which proved to be a sing-along.

As has been the case for the entire week of protests, all the attention was on the Koreans, who have stirred up a mixture of resentment and grudging respect among locals for their aggression, determination and strategic nous.
On Saturday night, this 1,000-strong group mounted repeated assaults on police lines, which they breached with steel bars, wooden poles and battering rams made from crowd barriers.
The 100 or so Koreans in the crowd were downbeat over the summit's outcome.

Vidor uses wide shots of the office (quoted by Billy Wilder in The Apartment), with its endless rows of identical desks and identical young men, all facing the same direction and doing the same thing, to slam home the point that most people in modern society are simply cogs in a huge machine.
The montage of the busy city streets, enormous crowds, and speeding trains that is Johnny's introduction to New York City is frantic and a bit awe-inspiring, especially the great shot that climbs the side of the building where Johnny works.
Many of the crowd shots were done with a hidden camera, and in one scene, when a traffic cop seems to tell us to move along, he was actually instructing Vidor and his crew to move.

 Jazz | All About Jazz
Though he didn't use a ring modulator or play with an army of electric guitarists, Ramsey Lewis was one of the more popular jazz musicians of the mid 1960s and helped bridge the gap between gospel, blues, soul, jazz, and rock/fusion experiments.
At the same time alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, who had first come to the public's attention as a Charlie Parker-style bop saxophone whiz was demonstrating a heavy soul and gospel influence with his famous Quintet, using such music to connect with an audience and expose them to more straightforward small group jazz sounds.
The Ramsey Lewis trio always included a light song in their repertoire that could hook a crowd of largely non-jazz listeners, including a jazz version of the operatic "Carmen" and the bluesy "Blues for the Night Owl".

 ANNUAL VIENNESE WALTZ BALLS
In fast dancing on a crowded floor, the lady needs to know precisely where her partner is going in order to follow quickly, and the man must know precisely where the lady is in order to lead quickly.
I have noticed that a crowd where all the men are dressed alike seems less crowded to me than an equally dense crowd where the men are dressed many different ways.
However, it agrees better than a simple density requirement with observations at crowded balls on floors as narrow as 15 by 77 feet (4.57 m by 23.46 m.) and as wide as 48 by 72 feet (14.6 by 21.9 m.).
