  What is a downburst?
A downburst is a localized area of damaging winds caused by air rapidly flowing down and out of a thunderstorm.
To create a downburst at the ground, the downward (downdraft) speeds in the thunderstorm must be unusually high, and this downward flowing air must penetrate close to the ground.
An usually strong and widespread downburst event hit northern Wisconsin on the 4th of July, 1977, with winds that were estimated to exceed 115 mph, and completely flattening thousands of acres of forest.

Science Question of the Week - summer thunderstorms - May 28, 2004
Downbursts are an intense type of downdraft in a thunderstorm.
A downburst is an especially violent descending bubble of air, usually less than 1 mile in diameter.
Remember...in a tornado, the wind and debris move inward toward the center, and then upward; in a downburst, the flow is reversed...air first moves downward to the surface from aloft, then spreads outwards along the ground.

A downburst is defined as a rapid downdraft of wind from a single cell thunderstorm which produces a sudden outflow of horizontal winds at the surface (Fujita 1981).
The cases we examined indicate that SVC is a good predictor of a potential downburst when it is present in or near the high reflectivity core of a single cell storm, somewhere within the 5,000 to 11,000 ft AGL layer.
Downbursts occurred in the summer season from early June through the end of September, and were much more common than we previously suspected.

Downburst - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A downburst is a column of sinking air that is capable of producing damaging straight-line winds of over 150 mph (240 km/h), often producing damage similar to, but distinguishable from tornadoes.
Likewise, the damage pattern left by a downbursts' straightline winds in the wake of an intense thunderstorm sometimes is often confused with that of a tornado.
Downbursts in air that is precipitation free or contains virga are known as dry downbursts; those accompanied with precipitation are known as wet downbursts.

The downburst or microburst (smaller scale) is an intense, penetrative downdraft, which spreads outward in all directions upon reaching the surface (see figure 9) (11)(32).
Similar to the RFD, the downburst would be circulated by the mesocyclone counter-clockwise from the origination point to the rear flank of the thunderstorm.
In all four models, the contribution of dry air impinging the supercell thunderstorm along the rear-flank is vital to the downward acceleration (from evaporative cooling) of the downburst toward the surface (34)(35)(37).

The microburst is a downburst which is confined to a small area, less than 4 km (2.5 miles) in diameter from the initial point of downdraft impact.
Downbursts occur in regions of a severe thunderstorm where the air is accelerated downward by exceptionally strong evaporative cooling occurs (a dry downburst) or by very heavy rain which drags dry air down with it (a wet downburst).
Often, damage associated with a downburst is mistaken for a tornado, particularly directly under the downburst.

The second critical phase is the formation of a "downburst." As rain falls from the storm, it pulls some upper-level air with it toward the ground, creating a downward movement of wind known as a downdraft.
Under the right conditions, solitary downbursts can combine to form a large, fast-moving "macroburst." This is the third critical phase in the formation of a derecho.
Meanwhile, the winds from the downburst hit the ground and begin to spread out, most strongly in the forward direction (because the storm is being pushed from behind).

In this handbook, we use the term downburst when no size scale is specified, or when speaking of a severe downdraft of horizontal dimensions exceeding 4 km (2.2 n mi).
In some situations a downburst may begin as a microburst but subsequently spread out and continue to be strong enough to be classified as a larger scale downburst; however, it is when the downdraft-outflow structure is compact, as in a microburst, that it poses a serious hazard to aircraft.

The National Weather Service says damage to two houses and several barns and sheds in Ellicott earlier this week was caused by a high-wind phenomenon known as a downburst -- not a tornado.
Authorities say some residents suffered bumps and bruises when a powerful thunderstorm swept across the area Monday, nearly destroying a mobile home and blowing part of a roof onto a house.
Weather service spokesman James Hall says a survey indicated the debris was lying in a pattern indicating damage caused by a downburst, which is a powerful gust of wind that suddenly rushes down out of a thunderstorm, strikes the earth and spreads quickly out across the ground.
