  Downfall - Rotten Tomatoes
Downfall doesn't let us down when it comes to telling what happened, but it has trouble coming up with how or why.
Downfall is not only terrific cinema, it is also a history lesson, a gripping psychological study, and a dire warning.
It is useful to reflect that racism, xenophobia, grandiosity and fear are still with us, and the defeat of one of their manifestations does not inoculate us against others.

Young Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara) lands the plum assignment, and it's mostly from her perspective that the remainder of the story is told as the scene shifts to Berlin in April 1945.
DOWNFALL has been coined a "German film for Germans", perhaps thinking that the despicability of the Nazi hierarchy will somehow be toned down for a home audience.
DOWNFALL is a must-see film for anybody interested in the death throes of Hitler's Reich.

 Downfall Review - FilmFocus.Co.UK
Downfall is likely intended primarily for German audiences; the filmmakers assume that the viewers are already aware of the major political and military players of World War II Germany and consequently perform very little in the way of character introduction.
Downfall makes no mistake: these are people who believed whole-heartedly in the Nazi party and thoroughly devoted themselves to it, and it's chilling to reflect on how many people were in this philosophy's thrall.
Downfall is a landmark acheivement and I implore anyone with an interest in this field or indeed anyone interested in brilliant film making and story telling to watch this compelling film.

In voiceovers that bookend Downfall, the real Traudl Junge confesses that she basically refused to think about what was happening at the time.
Downfall has graphic and gruesome moments, as well as some nudity, but those moments are not sensationalized by any means.
Downfall is a gut-wrenching film, which is confirmed by the substantial bonus features.

"Downfall" takes place almost entirely inside the bunker beneath Berlin where Adolf Hitler and his inner circle spent their final days, and died.
In a clip at the end of "Downfall," filmed shortly before her death, she says she now feels she should have known more than she did about the crimes of the Nazis.
"Downfall" premiered at Toronto 2004, and was one of this year's Oscar nominees for best foreign film.

Downfall is easily the best of that subgenre of Bunker movies (see also Messrs Guinness and Hopkins), but it still doesn't quite work as well as it should.
My major concern with Downfall is that it helps serve to disembody the german people from their collective responsibility for elected and supported Nazi fascism and the Holocaust, by making their Leader, or Fuhrer, into a gibbering wreck.
downfall is a 2004 german movie wwith german dialogue depicting the last ten days of hitlers life and the end of the third reich and the war which resulted in 50 million deaths, the film is primarily set in the bunker that hitler hid in along with those he trusted.

Downfall's overstuffed melodrama juggles countless subplots and a small army of characters who manage to make an impression in spite of limited screen time.
Downfall is gripping, moving, and, in the end, profoundly horrifying.
That's the problem of Downfall in a nutshell: It provokes insufficient emotional and intellectual responses to a grotesque and atrocious dictatorship.

Russian troops are closing in on Berlin as Adolf Hitler (Bruno Ganz) denies the war is lost, when not accusing his generals – who appear to suddenly realize he's utterly insane – and the German populace in general for betraying his National Socialist dream.
Downfall has sparked controversy in Europe, especially Germany, where its portrayal of Hitler and company was considered not nearly condemnatory enough.
The film wisely submerges this striking yet grounded performance in a meticulously researched ensemble drama that vividly conveys life in the middle of a siege, as well as the death throes of a diseased regime.

I take issue with David Denby’s assertion that: “Considered as biography, the achievement (if that’s the right word) of ‘Downfall’ is to insist that the monster was not invariably monstrous — that he was kind to his cook and his young female secretaries, loved his German shepherd, Blondi, and was surrounded by loyal subordinates.
Downfall is an intimate look at Hitler as, say, a look at Bin Laden’s hard drive: Budget squabbles, baby pictures, office politics, world domination, destruction of the infidels.
Downfall is worth the look, but perhaps I didn’t feel its particular impact because I’ve already learned long ago not to view Hitler as some kind of cartoon monster.

Downfall, a film by Oliver Hirschbiegel
Downfall is an exceptionally good example of the historical film, an enterprise that is always rife with the hazard of misrepresentation.
And yet, something about the film troubled me. In the aftermath of World War II Germany is probably the only country that has struggled with its responsibility for starting the war and for the crimes perpetrated before and during the war.
It's clear that in Downfall the audience is meant to identify with the human fears of those--besides Hitler and his worse cohorts--in the bunker.

"Downfall" is based largely on the memoirs of Junge, who survived until 2002 and was the subject of the documentary, "Blind Spot: Hitler's Secretary." Operation Downfall was the name given to the planned invasion of Japan.
By mid-1945, it was apparent that the collapse of Japan was near and the Allies had to plan for the invasion of the Japanese mainland - something that they knew would be very costly in terms of lives lost.
On September 2nd, Japan surrendered and America and her allies were spared the task of invading Japan with the projected massive casualties this would entail.

Barnes & Noble.com - DVD, Movie, Video: Downfall, Bruno Ganz, DVD, Wide Screen
Downfall does not for a moment justify anything Hitler did, but, in relying on the historical record presented by Junge, it does paint a more detailed picture of the man than has ever been seen: He even displays symptoms of kindness and takes comfort in his pet dog, Blondi.
Der Untergang (aka The Downfall) was based in part on the memoirs of the real-life Traudl Junge, whose experiences also formed the basis of the 2002 documentary Im Toten Winkel: Hitlers Sekretarin (aka Blind Spot: Hitler's Secretary).
Downfall stands as both an historically and emotionally authentic film, starkly portraying Hitler's seeming reasonableness, even humanity, in some moments, while also capturing the raving insanity of his tirades and blatherings.

BBC - Movies - review - Downfall (Der Untergang)
Based on the memoirs of Nazi secretary Traudl Junge - who told her story in the compelling doc Blind Spot, Downfall begins with Junge arriving at the bunker.
From there it moves outwards, taking in the army's chaotic attempts to defend the capital while, in the rabbit warren of concrete corridors that make up the bunker, Hitler and his closest advisors lose their grip on power and reality.
The rest of the bunker's cast of grotesques are equally fascinating: wild-eyed Eva Braun (Juliane Köhler) dances on tables and embraces death with a grin and a giggle; Goebbels (Ulrich Matthes) arranges for his children to be killed.

Downfall is told on an epic scale, with the Russian invasion bombarding the city and German civilians and soldiers (mostly boys and old men) scampering through the blown out husks of war-torn cityscapes.
Downfall skillfully interweaves the various social factions, which give weight and forbearance to the parts of the story we already know: Hitler in the bunker raving over maps, swearing up and down that the fallen 12th Army will come to save Berlin…and cold-blooded Mrs.
From the costumes to the sets to the lampshades and desks, Downfall is immaculately art directed and photographed with the respectable efficiency and grandeur of, say, The English Patient—and thankfully nowhere near as dull as those ponderous Miramax films.
