A large butter market formerly held on Monday, where 90,000 firkins have been bought annually by factors, is now obsolete ; the growing of corn and wool, and the feeding of cattle being now more attended to in this part of the county than the dairy.
At the enclosure, about 100 acres, called The Hundred acre Common was vested in trust with the churchwardens of Downham, Stow Bardolph, and Wimbotsham, the rents to be distributed among the poor of those parishes.

Downham Market’s 31st Annual Festival takes place from Sunday 29th May to Sunday 5th June inclusive.
Possibly the biggest event in Downham Market throughout the year is the Carnival which will take place on the Howdale on Bank Holiday Monday 30th May. There will be a variety of stalls and side shows as well as a fairground and, of course, special arena attractions.
Also, as tradition has dictated, the majority of the events throughout the week are arranged by local groups and include open days to their regular meetings, demonstrations of their work and specially arranged events such as concerts with a variety of entertainers both locally and from more further afield.

As RAF Marham has close links with the local community, the Station Commander - Group Captain Bob McAlpine and his wife Rachel were invited to attend the annual Downham Market Festival, held on the Howdale on Monday 31 May 2004.
The Festival was well attended and the weather stayed sunny and very warm for the whole day, despite the poor predictions.
In the main arena on the Howdale there was a display of mock battles by Knights in Armour, with side stalls, fair rides and the usual array of stalls covering the rest of the Howdale.

The project is intended to compliment the current town centre enhancement scheme carried out by Downham Market Regeneration Partnership under the Market Towns Initiative.
A3 trail guide leaflets will be produced supported by directional markers and 50 heritage plaques situated on buildings and sites of specific local interest in the town centre.
The intention is that the trail and plaques will promote the local community's interest and access to the local heritage as well as understanding of the history and significance of specific buildings and sites.
