Downhaul - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The downhaul is a line which is part of the rigging on a sailboat; it applies downward force on a spar or sail.
The most common downhaul on a modern sailboat is attached to the spinnaker pole, although the term is also commonly applied to the Cunningham on the mainsail.
The spinnaker pole downhaul performs much the same function as a foreguy, but is not actually identical; the foreguy is attached to the outboard end of the pole, while the downhaul applies its force to the middle of the pole.

 Greg's Tips - Cascading Downhaul
This makes it very easy to attach and detach the downhaul from the mainsail, allows the two double blocks to be suspended below the boom, where they won't catch on anything, and gives the two bullet blocks more freedom to align with the load.
Downhaul systems that have cheek blocks riveted to plates at the tack of the mainsail get pretty loaded up and can explode blocks due to loading them in weird directions.
Since the double are on a 2:1 system, you have a max potential downhaul range of 1/2 the distance between the double sheave and the swivel block.

Here is the sequence: Attach the halyard to the spinnaker's head, the sheet to the spinnaker's clew, the downhaul to the spinnaker's tack where the TACKER has already been shackled, pass the TACKER around the furled headsail, clip the snap shackle onto the spinnaler's tack and hoist away.
Trim the sheet and the downhaul and you are sailing.
The downhaul, in most cases, can be replaced by a rope pennant always on the spinnaker's tack, making the operation even easier.

Running Rig - Setting a Twizzle Rig
Rig the downhaul block and strop at the bows and release the twizzle sheets and outhauls from their stowed position on the pulpit.
Attach the universal joint to the uphaul and downhaul and leave slack on the deck by the mast.
Raise the universal joint and tension the downhaul till the universal joint is clear ahead of the mast and at a height above the level of the clews.

Downhaul pulleys, often referred to as "hooks", lessen the friction between your tack grommet and your downhaul line, making it easier to pull more on the downhaul.
A downhaul tool aids in easing the strain on your hand while trying to put optimal tension on your downhaul.
This aluminum tool is a cleat that you feed your downhaul line through, giving you a better grip on the line while protecting your hand.

Downhaul controls the twist in the sail and the most important thing is that there be enough downhaul.
Use a little less downhaul for a fuller sail in light winds to a lot of downhaul and a flat sail in higher winds.
However by adding even more downhaul so that the sail is floppy down to third and even forth batten from the top, the sail becomes more manageable.

 Sailboard Tuning Guide
Once the correct downhaul setting is found, it does not need to be changed much although slightly (<2cm) less for very light wind may help you get on the plane.
Once the downhaul is correctly tensioned, minute adjustments in outhaul tension will change the sail's performance.
Undo the downhaul, slide the mast from the sail.

Firstly, in order to make applying downhaul tension as easy as possible, it is important that the downhaul rope is threaded correctly through the bottom tack pulleys of the sail.
One of the things that I have been experimenting with when downhauling a sail is feeling the relationship between the amount of downhaul applied, and the amount of force required to apply that amount of downhaul.
What I have been doing is pulling gradually on the downhaul applying an even amount of pressure and when the sail stops, then that is where I set the downhaul.

Yachting and Boating World: Fore sail downhaul?
There is a light (6mm) downhaul line that goes to an eye with a spliced in ring.
The downhaul is then routed back to the cockpit through fairleads to a cam cleat.
The only problem is you have to remember to release the downhaul prior to pulling the jib halyard, sounds dumb but it is easy to forget the first couple of times.

Note the thin shockcord that pulls down on the pole downhaul, keeping it away from the end of the pole, so that it does not wrap around the pole, or go into the end fitting.
The downhaul starts from the pole, goes through a thimble on shockcord, up to the turning block at the top of the ram, down along the mast, though the mast step, to a cheek block underneath the mast step, where it is turned aft, and comes through the bulkhead, on the floor.
Note that the downhaul line emgerges through the bulkhead, goes around a bullet block, and then returns to the bulkhead where it is dead ended.

 Windsurfing Trimming and Tunning Tips..
Start with enough downhaul so leech is loose a third of the way to mast when you pick up the mast base so leech rests flat on ground.
Either extreme will limit gust-handling range (and may need outhaul tuning to stabilize draft), and very low downhaul tension will limit top speed (but at least you’ll be planing earlier) but there’s alot more range than most people think.
It may vary slightly with downhaul setting (see #3) but you should find one setting for each sail that’s only very slightly too tight in light wind (with light downhaul) and very slightly too loose in high wind (with high downhaul tension).

On sails with a vario-top, once you are familiar with the correct downhaul settings, re-check the head cap length vs. the mast extension height.
Whenever you increase or release downhaul, realize that the outhaul tension is also changed and may need to be adjusted as well.
More downhaul tightens the sail and induces more twist, which is good for overpowering conditions; less downhaul softens the sail and allows less twist, which is good in light wind and makes pumping more efficient.

Lace the downhaul line, keeping the path of line looping in the same direction each time you feed it through the Power Block and through your base pulleys.
The downhaul is the primary controller of the sail’s shape and performance.
Use less downhaul to increase foil depth for more power, to tighten the leech for better pumping; and to reduce twist and increase power in the upper part of the sail.

Before you go out on the water, you need to find the "power-position." This is the amount of downhaul where you have maximum pocket in your mainsail.
As you tighten the downhaul, you will see the pocket first increase, then decrease again as you pass the "power-position." Go back and forth a few times past the point until you are sure where it is. Then mark your mast where the pulley plate of your mainsail is at the power-position.
This is where you will downhaul for upwind until you are overpowered.

When I am sailing and want to store the jib (genoa), all I do is release the jib halyard, pull on the downhaul line and this pulls the jib (genoa) down into a ball on the foredeck.
I then pull on the downhaul line from the cockpit and the Jib (Genoa) is pulled down the forestay into a ball on the foredeck (inside the bow pulpit.
When you release the halyard, the main ring slides down the forestay pulling the downhaul down with it.

The shape of any sail on board is working best when the maximum curve in the sail occurs about one third of the way from the luff to the leech.
For the headsails, putting more tension on the tack downhaul will move the area of maximum curve towards the luff.
So the tack downhaul tension should be set light in light airs and high in strong winds.

To me, this downhaul setting yields the desired entry up top, the proper leach looseness, and still a full draft at the boom.
I have an 11.7 and I have found that downhauling until the wrinkle in the top panel reaches the luff sleeve it works well in all conditions.

The only connection to the gooseneck is a light line (red) that brings it down as the downhaul (orange) is applied.
The limiter stops the luff adjusting under sheet tension and allows the downhaul to be released while the main is sheeted on hard without the sail luff having to drag the gooseneck up the mast.
