Downhill creep - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Downhill creep is the slow progression of rock and other debris down a low grade slope; it can also refer to slow deformation of such materials as a result of prolonged pressure and stress.
Creep can be caused by the expansion of materials such as clay when they are exposed to water.
Design engineers sometimes need to guard against downhill creeep during their planning to prevent building foundations from being undermined.

 AVALANCHE TERMS
creep - the slow, continuous, glacier-like downhill deformation of the snow cover, as a result of gravity-induced internal snow motion.
This does not include the downhill motion of the snow cover relative to the ground, which is known as glide.
creep tension - tensile stress in snow caused by variations in creep velocity.

 Mass Movements Information
However slow movement is also seen in the gradual downhill creep of soil on gently sloping land.
Also, the more or less contiunous process of creep occurs more rapidly in soils that are usually wet than in soils that are relatively dry most of the time.
In Miami, there are various example of creep, where there is damage to buildings and houses.

Cooperative hunting enables lions to take prey as large downhill as wildebeests, zebras, buffaloes, young elephants, rhinos, hippos and giraffes, any of which can provide several meals for the pride.
It has long, slim, muscular legs, a small, rounded head set on a long neck, a flexible spine, a deep chest, nonretractable claws, special pads on its feet for traction and a long, tail for balance.
Cheetahs have distinctive fl "tear stripes" that connect from the inside corner of each eye to the mouth that may serve as an antiglare device for daytime downhill hunting.

Though the terminal end (lower end) of a glacier may be stationary, or even retreating uphill, the ice within the glacier continually moves downhill.
Most of the deformational creep takes place in the deepest layer of the ice, near to the basal layer.
The pace quickens as both sliding and creep act in unison to move ice downhill.

Everywhere the rocks are crumbling away; their fragments are creeping down hillsides to the stream ways and are carried by the streams to the sea, where they are rebuilt into rocky layers.
On the whole, therefore, the downhill movements prevail, and the mantle of waste, block by block and grain by grain, creeps along the downhill path.
At the foot of a hill we may find that the soil has accumulated by creep and wash to the depth of several feet; while where the hillside is steepest the soil may be exceedingly thin, or quite absent, because removed about as fast as formed.

 Eluvial Gold Placers
The principal mechanism for the concentration of heavy minerals in Eluvial placers is the winnowing action of gravity and downhill creep, the latter being essentially dependent on the angle of slope or gradient where the placers are formed on the sides of hills or mountains.
The continuous downhill creep appears to be the main way by which gold reaches gulches and creeks.
During the downward creep of minerals and rock fragments on slopes the lighter fractions tend to gravitate to the top layers and move relatively faster downhill than the heavier fractions.

These putts are generally in the 4:30 and 7:30 (uphill), or 10:30 and 1:30 (downhill) clock positions around the hole when the fall line up thru the hole runs 6 to 12.
The touch trick for downhill putts is that unless the touch is just as targeted, the ball will curl onto the wrong fall line under the pull of gravity.
Too little touch speed, and the ball curls downhill on a fall line short of the hole's fall line; too much speed and the ball runs thru the break and curls downhill on a fall line on the far side of the hole.

Erosion and Mass Movement   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
No, it´s not an unsavory character - "creep" is a slow downhill movement of the upper soil layers.
It´s creep that causes fences to drift out of line, gravestones to tip, and trees to slide downhill.
In general, the type of mass movement (whether creep, landslide, etc) is determined by several factors.

Solifluction, Alaska Science Forum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Another mechanism by which soil moves slowly downhill is creep.
When melting occurs in spring, the soil falls vertically downward, thereby ending up slightly farther downhill than where it was the previous fall.
In contrast to unitary flow in solifluction, soil creep moves the soil particles individually and thereby tends to mix them up as the creep proceeds.

 Physical Geology Slides-Soils and Weathering
When soil creeps downhill, small trees tend to be bent over, but also have a biological drive to grow vertically (called geotropism).
Thus, trees on creeping slopes tend to curve at the base.
It creeps downhill slowly but is not very securely in place and can also give way as a debris flow if it becomes wet enough.

Glossary - Landslides - Forces of Nature
mass movement: the downhill movement of rock and weathered material
mudflow: when a slope is so heavily saturated with water that it rushes downhill as a muddy river, carrying down debris and spreading out at the base of the slope; the fastest, wettest flow of weathered material down a hillside
soil creep: the gradual downhill slide of weathered material; the slow, gradual movement of a hill’s upper layers caused by the pull of gravity on loose stones, gravel, and soft topsoil

They hunt together to increase their success rate, since prey can be difficult to catch and can outrun a single rocky lion.

The vehicle creeps downward because there is plenty of traction to 'hold you back' from going faster.
On extreme descents, snow covered slopes or loose surfaces - the traction is not enough to 'hold you back' and you may begin to slide down the hill rather than roll with the engine/wheels.
This may be uncomfortable for you to go downhill at such a rate of speed, however, this enables you to have more control of the vehicle as you descend.

Creep results in deformation of rocks at the base of a slope under the influence of gravity.
In this case, no slip plane is required for the gradual downhill movement of earth materials.

Third, be aware when combining loads that the creep is downhill but the seismic is up or down.

In addition to the mechanically induced failure of the pingo overburden, the pingo ice itself is also deformed by creeping, faulting, and the wedging effect of dilation crack ice, and, to a lesser extent, of ice-wedge ice.
The outward displacement is enhanced, during pingo growth, by downhill creep and mass wasting.
Furthermore, as the summit dilation cracks widen, the overburden at the bottom of the crack depression becomes spread thinner and thinner over a greater and greater area until some of the pingo ice beneath may be exposed to thaw and thus produce the so-called pingo crater.

The problem started 6 mos ago with low speed, 5-10mph downhill for 5 -10minutes in 2nd or 1st gear, 2wd mode.
