  Beatbots Video : Downtown 81
Downtown 81 distinguishes itself with lovely cinematography and the infectious charisma of Basquiat, but despite these refinements, the saving grace of both films is their kinetic joy and undeniable cool, palpable nearly thirty years later.
And while Wild Style focused on the birth of hip hop culture, Downtown 81 found its muse in the post-punk/no-wave scene which has seen something of a resurgence these past few years, spurred on perhaps by the movie's 2000 release nearly twenty years after it was filmed.
Certainly more enjoyable than the rather staid biopic Basquiat, Downtown 81 is essential viewing for fans of Jean-Michel, graffiti buffs, no-wave revivalists, or anyone who wants a glimpse at the genesis of current youth culture.

 Downtown 81
Downtown 81 is the fractured, flimsy tale fictionalized around the life of Jean-Michel Basquiat, here in Edo Bertoglio's lost film, as the bludgeoning legendary artist stars as himself.
Completed in 1981, the film was left on the shelf in Europe until a couple of years ago when it was reassembled, unfortunately not into a documentary, but a slight, if stylized format of mini-plays that is sometimes a credible tribute to the relatively unknown New York City underground art scene.
Downtown 81 is a lesser effort than the self-titled Basquiat which starred Jeffrey Wright as the artist who was involved in the drug scene, meeting up with patrons, fashion models, and dealers.

Released after 20 years, "Downtown 81" stars graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, Debbie Harry and others in a rough but now-nostalgic look at the New York art scene when creative freedom was still allowed to trample the quality of life.
"Downtown 81" — which has the feel of a student film, and possesses both the unvarnished insights and poor structure of same — was filmed in the old New York that last-generation hipsters are always rhapsodizing about.
In "Downtown 81," New York is not a teeming global marketplace but a decaying playground for artists and musicians who seem to care more about having a good time than about decorating their apartment or checking the financial pages.
