Boston.com / News / Local / Mass. / Groups say MBTA's search policy violates rights
Avery and leaders of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee and the American Friends Service Committee held a news conference outside the Downtown Crossing MBTA station to announce their public awareness campaign, a precursor to their lawsuit.
The civil rights groups said they would distribute buttons that state "I do not consent to a search" to riders at MBTA stations this week.
MBTA Police Chief Joseph Carter said the policy, which will include explosive-sniffing dogs, was in part a response to the March 11 train bombings that killed 191 people in Spain.

All stations on the Orange Line are handicapped accessible, though State is not fully accessible on the Blue Line.
Originally known as the Main Line of the Boston Elevated Railway and later the Forest Hills-Everett Elevated Line, the current name is derived from Orange Street, an old name for the section of Washington Street immediately south of downtown under which the Washington Street Tunnel, forming the center of the line, still runs.

The station is on the upper right with a southbound train stopped in the station.
Most of the old "El" stations were beautifully designed, clad with copper sheathing, of which City Square is an example.
The stations have two separate parts, and originally each platform had its own name such as Milk/State (now State), and Union/Friend (now Haymarket).

 Boston Globe Online: Print it!
Violent robbery is most common at Downtown Crossing, with 20 incidents, Forest Hills, with 19, and Jackson Square, with 10.
Thefts increased only slightly system-wide, but South Station, Forest Hills, Lynn, Park Street, and Quincy Center were host to the greatest number of incidents.
The Park Street station, as well as the Green Line, ''historically has been a haven for pickpockets,'' Bachta said.

 G.O.A.T. - MBTA Absurdity
Obviously, the MBTA can't be held responsible for that.
All MBTA buses now sport this highly visible sign, which I interpret to mean that passengers always enter via the front door and exit via the rear door.
Personally, I think passes should be sold at most stations, and at least on weekends when the last or first day of the month falls on the weekend.

 Welcome to BadTransit -
It's having the MBTA meet its obligations to justify their request, and allowing the public to weigh the evidence, comment, and have their concerns heard.
The change in law the MBTA wanted would clear the way for their planned fare increase next January by removing a sensible requirement that's been in place for years.
Unfortunately none of these penalties are being imposed by the MBTA, although the T is regularly and proudly announcing that their new contract has these incentives built in.

The players and singers have become familiar and mostly welcome sights and sounds for subway riders (the main complaint, said one MBTA spokeswoman, is when musicians have taken forbidden smoke breaks on the platform).
Baird was also instrumental in winning musicians the right to amplify their voices and instruments (at "a reasonable volume" according to the MBTA, and drums are not allowed), and to sell cassettes and CDs of their music on the platforms.
musicians battled the city and the MBTA for years to establish themselves beneath the streets.

Former WWE Superstar Causes Anthrax Scare In Boston
Beefcake - these days Edward Leslie, 46, of Winchester - voluntarily checked into a treatment program Monday, according to a source, after cocaine he admitted was his created an anthrax scare at the MBTA's Downtown Crossing subway station.
The MBTA confirmed yesterday they have an employee named Edward Leslie, but would not say if he was the one they suspended without pay after cocaine turned up Sunday afternoon on the counter of a Downtown Crossing fare booth, prompting an emergency hazmat response.
Although the subway station was evacuated, MBTA Deputy Police Chief Thomas McCarthy said the fare collector - who he also would not identify - spared commuters further inconvenience by coming clean and dispelling terrorism fears.

Articles - Dudley Square (MBTA station)
Silver Line, the MBTA's replacement service for the Washington Street Elevated, officially redesignated the 49 bus route on July 20, 2002, and has run between Dudley and downtown ever since.
The old station sat untouched for a while, but was eventually torn down and replaced with a simpler surface-level station, with busways oriented east-west.
The loop allowing trains to return downtown from Dudley was kept, and a new southbound platform was added (as both original platforms were on the northbound track).

Refers both to Young Alex (Malcolm McDowell)'s fake eyelashes in the movie "A Clockwork Orange," and to a specific image of a bowler-hatted man with huge eyelashes, whom Kibo always calls "Young Alex," on a 1970s-era decoration at the Kenmore Square MBTA station.
The rest of the story is laced with other references to Boston-area landmarks and the MBTA subway system.

The orange line from Oak Grove to North Station or Downtown Crossing or the red line from Braintree, Quincy Center to South Station was also popular.
The most popular route was the red line from Davis to Downtown Crossing (Harvard, Central, Davis, and Kendall were used a lot).
On the subway, you hear the stops, but if you are not familiar with Boston from walking in it or driving in it, you may actually picture the route like the MBTA route maps in the subway.

At Park Street Station, Red Line riders will be trying to transfer to the Green Line, while those coming on the Green Line in from the Back Bay and points west will be scampering across the platform to get on trolleys headed for Government Center and Haymarket toward the convention site.
Expect a lot of company on the Blue Line and the Orange Line, as commuter rail passengers transfer to those lines north of Boston as their trips are cut short because of the closing of North Station.
It may be smarter to get out at Park Street and walk to wherever you're headed rather than transfer.

Signs are crafted by a 125 year old troll living in the depths of Boylston Station using scrap metal from Breda Type 8s and fallen debris from the peeling ceilings, and written with instruments dropped from the pockets of disgruntled commuters.
Upon entering the station, I notice four MBTA police officers congregating around the "MBTA Police Reporting Station." I expected a police presence, due to the shooting of a pregnant woman one station away two days before and the heightened terrorist alert announced this morning.
The previously stationed milk crates with plastic bags (for catching drips) have now disappeared, and been replaced simply with an orange cone and a yellow safety placard, advising commuters to avoid the "wet floor".
