| | Moving Grierson Centre out of downtown Edmonton |
 | | EDMONTON, May 26, 2004—Peter Goldring, Member of Parliament, today responded to concerns expressed by Kevin Grabowsky, Prairie president of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers, that the advocated closure of Edmonton’s minimum-security inner city prison, the Grierson Centre, will result in a loss of jobs. |
 | | It must also be remembered that the “Grierson effects” are long-lasting, in terms of the number of parolees coming out of Grierson and on to Edmonton Streets, stretching police resources in having to monitor for parole violations, rather than otherwise fighting crime. |
 | | Community safety must be paramount, when faced with failures in the justice system that result in the types of inmates who are sent to Grierson, for release into the Edmonton community. |
