High property taxes downtown are causing cause retail and service businesses to close or go to suburban locations, she says, but adds this is a function of high value assessments dictated by the provincial assessment system and general market conditions, things over which city politicians have little control.
McGarry intends to run for mayor of Ottawa in 2006 and, while he jokes that reducing taxes for funeral homes "won't fly" as a central campaign theme, more fairness for small businesses in urban areas will be central to his platform.
