Doxbridge is a portmanteau word referring to the Universities of Durham, Oxford and Cambridge, the three oldest chartered universities in England.
A portmanteau (plural: portmanteaux or portmanteaus) is a word that is formed by combining both sounds and meanings from two or more words.
Doxbridge is also the name of a sporting event held every year, in which Durham, Oxford and Cambridge colleges compete against each other; though this is again much less famous than competitions between Oxford and Cambridge alone, such as the Boat Race, the varsity games, or the Cambridge and Oxford inter college tournaments.

Oxbridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is one of the first recorded instances of the word, but it did not enter common usage until the middle of the 20th century.
Other portmanteau names are occasionally derived from the term 'Oxbridge', either adding or replacing universities in the portmanteau - for example, 'Doxbridge' refers to Oxford, Cambridge and the University of Durham, and is most notably in use as the name of an annual sports tournament involving the three institutions.
None of these newer terms, however, has achieved as widespread usage as the term 'Oxbridge', which is a household name in the UK.
