 Leonardo Nierman - Homepage
One important predecessor is Dr. Atl (Gerardo Murillo Cornadó), who can be regarded as the true founder of the modern Mexican school.
Atl is known as "the painter of volcanoes"--these obsessed him, and he painted canvas after canvas representing them, finally building himself a house near Paricutín, in order to record every aspect of the volcanic eruption which began there in 1943 and lasted for three years.
Nierman is much less literal than Dr. Atl in his representation of landscape.

TONY BURTON - DR. ATL AND THE REVOLUTION IN MEXICAN ART.
During his stay in Europe, Atl, amongst other achievements, walked from Rome to Paris and later from Paris to Madrid, won a silver medal in the Salon de Paris for a self-portrait and was profoundly influenced by the impressionist and Post-impressionist movements then in vogue in Europe.
Atl's contribution to the Mexican art revolution had already been considerable; he had encouraged, aided and in several cases taught many major artists of the next generation including Orozco, Siqueiros, Clausell, Zaraga, Galvan and others, including a then unknown Diego Rivera.
Atl died in 1964 after 89 years full of intrigue, interest, scandal, notoriety, adventure and eccentricity, and in the middle of a self-imposed programme to learn Chinese.

 El Universal Online
For me the highlight was to see so many of Dr. Atl's volcano paintings together this itself makes repeat visits to this exhibition worthwhile as well as the color sketch "Seis volcanes, ventana al paraíso" (1961), an expressionist series of powerful action drawings, exploring the force and heart of volcanic activity.
The greatest merit of the show, says the Cuernavaca-based author, is that it has joined together all the connotations that the volcanoes have, harmonizing potentially dissonant visions, such as those of a 21st century artist, a scientist, a healer, anthropologist, artisan, poet, mountaineer and photographer.
What the show could do with more of is the spirit of Dr. Atl, a more furious and dynamic, eccentric and stop-atnothing kind of vision.
