Dr Hook was one of the most successful US acts, worldwide, of the 1970's and early 1980's - they had more than 50 gold and platinum albums, had # 1 hits in over 42 territories, they sold millions and millions of records and their tours sold out everywhere.
In the back of my mind, I was always aware that there was something more to Dr Hook than the loveable, stoned hippy thing and I never bought into the 'good time' vibe that seemed to permeate their early hits.
Dr Hook always reminded me of Cary Grant and Steve Martin - they seems so nice and transparently obvious, but underneath, there's lots of other darker shit going on all the time.

The first ten Dr Hook albums were offered in the U.S. and abroad, with the last two (The Rest of Dr. Hook, and Let Me Drink From Your Well) never having been released in the States at all.
As Dr. Hook moved among the three record labels they recorded on, there were greatest hits packages issued by each previous record company they had left.
Most every Dr. Hook fan has been frustrated at some time, in trying to find tracks they don't already have, and ending up with some of those same old 30-50 songs that have been issued and reissued time and again.

Prior to forming Dr. Hook And The Medicine Show, George Cummings, Ray Sawyer and Billy Francis were members of an earlier group called "The Chocolate Papers", along with Bobby Dimingus, Popeye Phillips and Jimmy "Wolf Cub" Allen.
Hook were subsequently offered a one-year deal with the company and thus began the most successful and musically creative period of their career.
Dr Hook's next U.S. single, 'All The Time In The World', also from the 'Pleasure And Pain' album, could only reach number 54 in February 1979 but was followed by what was to ultimately become Dr. Hook's biggest-selling single, 'When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman', composed by Even Stevens.

Dr. Hook was conceived in 1968 in Union City, New Jersey when a local 19 year old aspiring singer-songwriter named Dennis Locorriere teamed up with 32 year old rythm and blues performer Ray Sawyer from Chickasaw, Alabama.
Hook were subsequently offered an initial one-year deal with the major company and thus began the most successful and musically creative period of their career.
Dr. Hook were one of the great fun pop-country rock bands of the Seventies and early Eighties, and their musical demise was mourned by thousands of fans around the world.

Sadly, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, after weathering instant stardom, bankruptcy, several comebacks, much touring, a lawsuit by their former drummer Jay David, and a fall into meaningless gigs to pay the bills, finally broke apart in 1985.
According to Dr. Hook fan Andy May, Sawyer now tours under the name "Dr. Hook"--though he has to license the name from Dennis Locorriere.

Robert Jance Garfat, Dr. Hook baseplayer extraordinaire, who played with the band from around 1971 to 1984, passed away November 6, in a very tragic accident.
Jance by way of Dr. Hook, touched millions of lives, and that is a fine legacy.

For much of their career, people thought of Ray as the star (THE Dr. Hook), which was inaccurate, but was definitely the way things were perceived.
Much has been made of Ray using the Dr. Hook name, but rest assured Dennis and Ray clearly have a financial understanding about using the name etc, as Dennis controls the rights to the old material, name, etc., though we’re not privy to exactly what the arrangements are.
I had heard that Ray must PAY the Dr. Hook Corporation i.e.: Dennis, to use the name, either way Dennis has not attempted to stop Ray from performing as Dr. Hook.

The music here is very well written and my guess is that there were other reason's that Dr. Hook didn't achieve a higher level in the music world besides lack of super talent.
While it might be hard to recommend this album to the twenty year olds with modern ears for music, if you like bands like CCR and 70's music (the kind with some folk tale quality to it) and you haven't sampled this yet, you'll probably be surprised you missed it.
I had been looking for one particular song by Dr. Hook for years and didn't know the name of it.

I have been a massive fan of Dr Hook since i was a little child, as has my younger sister.
If you haven't listened to Dr Hook before then this CD is a good start as you don't know what you're missing with these funky guys.
Dr Hook more than satisfied me and I can say that the greatest hits album goes down very well at parties.
