Tucson Weekly : Books : Great Gonzo
The last letter comes to Thompson from Acosta's sister, asking for help locating her disappeared brother; Dr. Gonzo vanished somewhere off the coast of Mexico and was never found.
(Dr. Gonzo, the Samoan attorney in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, is Oscar Acosta; the book's plot recounts the pair's Vegas adventures.) The friendship, revealed in letters exchanged between the two, is heartbreaking as it gradually and bitterly deteriorates over legal wranglings concerning the book and film rights.
Thompson, of course, is best known for his brutal and brilliant adventures in Gonzo Journalism, the fiercely subjective, highly participatory combination of reportage and commentary best displayed in his masterworks, Hell's Angels, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail.

"Dr. Gonzo"' was also the stage name of 1980s stand-up comic John Means, who was based in San Francisco, and gained modest fame as the warm-up act for Huey Lewis and the News and performing in their music videos.
Gonzo is a name invented by Hunter S. Thompson, as a nickname for himself (although in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, it became the pseudonym for Oscar Zeta Acosta); hence, the phrase "gonzo journalism."
He retired from comedy in the 1990s and is now a college professor in his hometown of Mason City, Illinois.

BBC NEWS Magazine Bedtime for Gonzo?
And all have spoken of him as the inventor, and ultimate practitioner, of Gonzo journalism, that compelling and outrageous amalgam of reportage and literature, held together by an intoxicating emulsion of drink, drugs and sexual excess.
The UK had, after a fashion, its own exponents of Gonzo writing, confessional scribblers fuelled by drink, terrified of women and constantly in thrall to the Siren-call of the race course and the bookie.
The truth of the matter may well be that, in its purest form, the only real Gonzo journalist was Dr Hunter S Thompson himself.

This transplants Dr. John Dolittle from the South Seas (?) in the Rex Harrison musical to San Francisco, where Murphy is a non-singing surgeon and a pain-in-the-ass to his gorpy daughters and bodacious wife.
With the exception of one scene, in which Murphy sings "Eye of the Tiger" to the tiger, the gonzo role is usurped by Chris Rock as the guinea pig who screams, "I'm cute, I'm furry and I make 500 babies a year!" and sings James Brown songs to himself.
The demands of career and family have made Dolittle forget that as a kid, he had the ability to converse with animals.

Thompson’s real investment is in the creation of "Dr. Hunter S. Thompson," the "Dr." (of Gonzo letters) serving as a nominal wink at the co-conspiratorial reader.
The operating principles of Gonzo Journalism, moreover, provide new benchmarks against which to measure Mark Twain’s accomplishment as a reporter, just as the similarities between the two writers offer a backdrop against which to contrast their strikingly dissimilar views of the world.
This is the charge—no slouch of a charge, as Mark Twain might have observed—that rests at the heart of Thompson’s insistence that the Gonzo reporter’s burden is to
