REDOUBT - Book of the Month
Doctor Mid-Nite begins with a drug deal, where the new Doctor meets the narrator of the story, who happens to need a certain illegal steroid to keep herself moderately healthy.
The idea of this story isn't to get Doctor Mid-Nite into action, it's to create the background of the Dr. Peter Cross, and to flesh out his motivations.
If my memory serves me correct, and there's a problem there, Thomas used a more gramatically proper Dr. Midnight for the new version, who was a black woman doctor, and that was all there was to her.

Sequential Tart - The Report Card
So when the new Doctor Mid-Nite series hit the shelves, I think I avoided getting it, because I was upset about the fate of Dr. Beth Chapel.
However, artwork aside, Matt Wagner reintroduced the mythos of Doctor Mid-Nite to the DCU in an interesting fashion that had several nods to the original and the second, but also enough uniqueness about it to be its own origin — in a sense.
However after seeing his take on Doctor Mid-Nite, I wouldn't mind reading more of his superhero stylings.

Dr. Occult is not only a good guy to list from the 'mystical' standpoint of the DCU, but he's also one of the few re-occuring characters from the EARLIEST DC comics (New Fun #6, as i recall, pre-dating superman, etc).
The thing is, Dr. Phosphorus just had a fairly long-running stint in James Robinson's Starman, and his power was juiced-up by the ill-advised "Genesis" cross-over.
