Several film projects were announced with Schwarzenegger attached to star including the remake of The Planet of the Apes, a new film of I am Legend and a World War II film scripted by Quentin Tarantino that would have seen Schwarzenegger finally play an Austrian.
His first film appearance was as Hercules in Hercules in New York (1970), credited under the name Arnold Strong, although his accent in the film was so thick that his lines were dubbed.
He also made a mark for injecting his films with a droll, often self-deprecating sense of humor, setting him apart from more serious action heroes such as Sylvester Stallone, his most prominent contemporary.

I'm not sure whose idea it was to star Murphy -- the man who became famous for using all the words Lenny Bruce couldn't -- in films pitched to children, but it works.
The very idea of replacing Rex Harrison with Eddie Murphy is as funny as anything that takes place on the screen in either film; and oddly enough, it works.

 Dr Dolittle 2 film review
Dr Dolittle 2 is an insipid and generally humourless affair, reliant on Murphy's charm and the cuddly critters to win over the audience.
In Dr Dolittle 2, Eddie Murphy reprises his role as the crazy quack with the ability to talk to the animals.
Dolittle is enlisted to ensure the survival of the Pacific Western bear, and to save a stretch of endangered forest from the bulldozers of a nasty lumber company.

DOLITTLE marks Farhat's second collaboration with Murphy, having supervised the memorable effects on "The Nutty Professor." 'The earlier film provided at least one valuable lesson for DR. DOLITTLE.
While all the film makers embraced the opportunities that these effects would afford, it would be an understatement to say that Betty Thomas found her first foray into the world of visual effects a little daunting, "Every effects shot is different, presenting its own problem," explains Thomas.

In this film, the vast majority of screen time is spent on Archie, and while Steve Zahn is not unknown (he has appeared in numerous supporting roles over the last few years, including, coincidentally, the husband of Kudrow's character on Friends), he's not exactly a household name.
As with the '98 film, there are fart jokes (which surely get the biggest laughs), but Murphy's part in this movie is not so much animal doctor as animal Dr. Ruth.
Although Dr. John Dolittle has become famous for being verbally conversant with his beastly patients, the situation puts a strain on his family relationships, especially regarding his teen daughter Charisse (Raven-Symone), who would rather lock herself in her room or visit her boyfriend (Lil' Zane) than attend family gatherings.

In 1998, Dr. Dolittle delighted audiences young and old around the world with its comic re-invention of Hugh Lofting's classic children's stories about a kind-hearted doctor who has the ability to converse with animals.

His reprisal of Dr. Dolittle is a nice turn, more toned-down than his cadre of Nutty Professor characters and as sweet as the nicer side of his dual roles in Bowfinger, but by now, you see that Murphy is basically sleepwalking through the movie.
Dolittle 2, a sequel to Murphy's 1998 hit remake of the Rex Harrison film from the '60s, is an exercise in mediocrity.
Because screenwriter Larry Levin borrows so many elements from the first film, he never realizes his full potential to pen a follow-up that actually could have been original.

Dolittle quickly comes up with a plan: there is a lone female member of the rare Pacific Western bear species (who happens to be named Ava, and is voiced by Lisa Kudrow) living in the threatened forest.
The jokes are mostly juvenile, silly and or crude (A bear using a toilet in an "emergency" -- gross, but funny), but the film has some sweet moments, a surprise or two, and an important, if overused, message about preserving nature.
The movie opens with Murphy reprising the role of Dr. John Dolittle, coping with a hectic double career as a successful (people) surgeon and a uniquely qualified, and thus highly in-demand, veterinarian (yes, he can talk with animals).

Still, with Eddie Murphy's film version waiting in the wings and this new musical, loosely adapted from the Sixties film starring Rex Harrison, it seems that Hugh Lofting's idiosyncratic tales, written as a form of escapism from the horrors of the trenches in the First World War, are inching their way back into acceptance.

After disliking the crudeness of the 1996 Eddie Murphy version of The Nutty Professor, I was all set to despise his remake of Dr.
As it is, the two characters share only the name, and it is unfortunate that the movie could not have been named something else entirely.
One annoying element, which also turned out to be its saving grace, is that the story has absolutely nothing to do with Hugh Lofting's character or even, for that matter, the 1967 Rex Harrison version of Doctor Dolittle.
