House Plant Identification - July Newsletter - Flower Shop Network
The plants we grow most often in our homes are usually juvenile forms of potentially much larger tropical plants, but given the limitations of space, light, humidity, and nutrition, it's not likely that they would ever reach mature size.
Dracaenas are well adapted to indoor growing conditions, being fairly undemanding as to light and moisture requirements.
These are plants of the forest floor in their native tropics, and thus are well adapted to the low light conditions of most homes and offices.

How to Care for Your Dracaena, Dracaena Care, Plant Care, Marginata, Massangeana
Growing 1,000's of plants is the most powerful way to learn their proper care.
In fact, if you asked a plant care professional, like myself, to drop by for a visit and help you learn about plant care, you'd be charged in the neighborhood of $75 to $100 per hour, not including travel time.
Do you know someone just starting with plants and want to give them a indoor plant they'll be able to keep looking good with little effort… or maybe you need a really versatile plant for a particular space with low lighting or you just want to try something different.

The plants genus name, Dracaena, is derived from the Greek word drakaina which means a 'dragon' and alludes to the sap or juice of the stems of Dracaena draco, which was said to resemble dragon's blood.
Young dracaena plants naturally have leaves located at the base of the plant, but as the plants mature, they lose their bottom leaves, thus giving the plant a palm-like appearance.

Plant grade and weight results for weeping fig show that, under the conditions of these tests, weeping fig quality was maintained only when plants were watered on the day simulated shipping began.
Dracaena 'Massangeana' in experiment 1 seemed unaffected by simulated shipping treatments but in experiment 2, when plants were maintained under simulated indoor conditions for 6 weeks, foliage damage decreased as length of time between watering and initiation of simulated shipping increased.
Plants, container and growing medium were weighed together as a unit immediately before simulated shipping was initiated on July 19, and again immediately after plants were removed from coolers on August 2, 1991.

 Dracaena
Most of us have at least one dracaena in our home or office as it is one of the plant that easily survive indoors even when the conditions are far from ideal.
Dracaenas need plenty of light, filtered through a curtain if indoors, or in a semi-shaded spot on our balconies because direct sunlight can damage their leaves, especially during the warm months of summer.
Good solutions that provide humidity to plants are the use of a humidifier, or grouping of the plants on the tray with pebbles that you always keep moist so that the plants will absorb the humidity of the water as it dries out.
