Filmed in Yugoslavia and England, it was a fairly faithful and moody piece.
In 1995, Mel Brooks did a comedic parody, Dracula: Dead and Loving It, which parodied all of the standard Dracula themes, but especially noteworthy was the scene where Dracula's reflection was noticeably absent in a mirror as he danced at a ball, to the horror of those watching.
While he is not confirmed directly to be Dracula, Drake is implied to have lived under several different aliases and personalities, one of which may have been the infamous vampire.

Although Badham's film appears to borrow the spider-web imagery from the opening sequence of the 1930 film by creating a breathtaking design of sparkling webs overhanging Lucy (Kate Nelligan) as she dines in the Count's home, it does so in order to subvert its meaning from the original film.
In Bram Stoker's Dracula, the film magic that so impressed Dracula is a key component to the film, which is why Coppola and his second unit director Roman Coppola chose to shoot the film in a style that consciously reflects the early days of filmmaking.

Dracula (or Horror of Dracula as it's known in the USA) is fantastic.
Though the majority of the film falls on Peter Cushing, who's Van Helsing is great fun to watch especially in the second half, Christopher Lee manages to command a huge screen presence in his limited screen time.
My only criticism, and this is as much a testament to the film's greatness as it is a flaw, is that the film is too short.

To an audience that had been raised on the Bela Lugosi Dracula (1931) and the cardboard, melodramatic figure that Dracula became among the Universal monsters lineup in the 1940s, this film must have had an incredible shock value.
Countess Dracula (1970) is a Hammer film but not a Dracula film and in fact tells the legend of Countess Elizabeth Bathory.

Seward's character (The Dr. is relegated to a tiny role in the film as the Holmwood family doctor), Van Helsing is given youth, vigour and wisdom.
Jonathan knows exactly what Dracula is and goes to his castle to destroy him (unlike in the book where he is sent there by the reel estate agency he works for, and is completely clueless about what Dracula is).

For me Bela is the classic Dracula and I have always had a fondness for this film, yet I can't deny that Hammer's Dracula was way more frightening and had more of a great graphic look.
But in fairness to Universal, Dracula came out in the late 30's while Hammer's Dracula was released probably in the early 60's which of course explain some differences that each had.
It's not that the film is filled with blood and violence, but that modern viewers are so numb to such things that a film of this subtlety is greatly lost on them.

Changed to Horror of Dracula for the US release (to prevent confusion as Bela Lugosi’s Dracula was still playing in the theaters), this film put Hammer on the map.
This film sets the bar high in the "mood" department and Hammer Films never met this standard again (with the possible exception of The Hound of the Baskervilles).
Horror of Dracula is one of those horror gems that come around once in a lifetime… or at least as many times as Lee decides to wear a cape.

Speaking of terrible film roles, Ed Wood would later have Lugosi reprise his zombie-calling, hand-clutching-hand maneuvers in Bride of the Monster.
The heroine of the film is Ann Darrow, played beautifully by one of the earliest scream queens, Fay Wray (The Vampire Bat, Mystery of the Wax Museum).
It is not only a wonderful film for its genre, but it is a great accomplishment in cinematic history, period.

Lee is Dracula, Cushing is Dr. Van Helsing, and "Horror Of Dracula" is one of the best horror films of the fifties, one of a small number from the latter part of that decade that would set the stage for numerous fright films to come over the next 15-20 years, both Hammer and otherwise.
Dracula himself is, perhaps surprisingly, seen relatively little during most of the show.

Despite Lee's protestations that he has appeared in 200 movies other than the Dracula outings, his perfection in the role means that it is as the elegant blood sucker that we will always remember him.
This sequel lacks the sustained bravura of the classic Dracula (1958) but opens stunningly as he disintegrates at the hands of Van Helsing - only to be revivified by a trusty servant who mixes the blood of a murdered tourist with his master's ashes.
Although uttering no threats or curses (it's rumoured Lee thought the dialogue rubbish and just refused to say his lines), his intentions, particularly to the two heroines, are clear.
