  NFL Draft at AllExperts
The NFL Draft has been in New York City since 1965 and has had to move into large venues as the event has gained in popularity, drawing fans from across the country who are looking for a reason to paint their faces in April.
The team with the second-worst record gets the second pick, and so on (with ties broken by strength of schedule) until the Super Bowl participants are reached, with the team that lost the game picking next to last, and the winner picking last.
The draft has popularized the term Workout Warrior, whereby an athlete, based on superior measurables such as size, speed and strength, have increased their "draft stock" despite having a possibly average or subpar college career.

Draft night hasn't been Jerry West's best the Celtics took Gerald Green one pick ahead of him last year.) But West also has been picking in the mid-to-late first round, so that is pretty much a crapshoot anyway.

Although it would have made sense to provide Brett Favre with the draft's best pass catcher in tight end Vernon Davis, this is the perfect cornerstone player for the new era of coach Mike McCarthy.

(Although that compensation pick, if unsigned, is not subject to compensation, which keeps clubs from using it over and over.) Clubs have for years wanted a system of prescribed, slotted bonuses for every high pick but learned early in the negotiations that the union would not accept it, so instead focused on stronger compensation rules.
One other change to the amateur draft is a uniform signing date of Aug. 15 for all players (other than college seniors), replacing the longtime and clumsy deadline of the moment a player literally attends his first four-year college class.
Several ideas that have been discussed over the years, such as the trading of draft picks and an either supplemental or combined draft of all players worldwide, were not adopted.

 1966 NBA Draft Pick Transactions
One thing I have learned about '60s drafts is that the later rounds of the drafts were sometimes conducted through a "supplementary" process, in which the players were not selected on draft day, but were claimed after the fact by teams submitting players' names to the league office.
The draft lists in the Times, TSN and the 5/11 evening Globe (all of which explicitly identify the round each player was selected in) show eleven players as having been selected in the second round, including Mueller, Finkel and Block.
The explanation seems to be that on draft day Philly decided to stop picking after the sixth round, but later decided to make a couple of supplementary picks (remember, the ninth round was the first supplementary round).

However, that pick will then go to a team that competes with you, directly or not, and since they make better use of that pick than you would, you're in fact best served by picking a Boras client and offering them a ham sandwich.
The pick goes unsigned and you get a sandwich pick (presently) or another future first-round pick (with the proposed but not yet enacted draft changes), by which time you've hopefully revamped your organization enough that your picks are more like well-researched investments than blind rolls of the dice.
The draft pick rules are complicated and no one realized that signing Mike Magnante, if they didn't sign anyone else, would cost them their first-round pick.

Raiders in running for top draft pick - Boston.com
The race for this top pick lacks much of the intrigue of last season when many fans of the Houston Texans even cheered for their team to lose to boost the chances of getting the No. 1 selection.
The Texans ended up drafting Mario Williams, who has a bright future but is not as big a star as some of the players who went later in the first round.
Either way, the Raiders are guaranteed a high draft pick, which could bring in a player to boost the league's worst offense.

Draft Daddy : NFL Draft: Theory
A draft is a draft; the setting of this story simply has fewer variables than the current manifestation of the greatest selection process in the greatest of sports: the NFL draft.
As noted earlier the NFL draft is not nearly as simple as this example; an NFL team has to fill over four times the amount of starting slots as an NBA team and has to deal with hard salary cap constraints.
The best drafting teams often fill all of their obvious needs via free agency (which opens for business roughly eight weeks prior to the draft), so that on draft day they can make their selections without the pressure for filling needs clouding their judgments.
