Dragons in the Writings of J.R.R. Tolkien
As Tolkien notes in "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics," the focus in medieval literature is really only on two dragons: "Fafnir and Beowulf's bane." In his writings on Middle-earth, the focus is likewise on just two: Glaurung and Smaug, and only one other is named, Ancalagon the Black
The unnamed dragon plays an intermediate role in the story, taking his hoard from an old dwarf and dying in turn at the hands of a young warrior.
Forced to confront the dragon still again by his king, who plans to confiscate the treasure, Giles survives an attack, killing most of the king's knights, and once again gets the best of Chrysophylax, who brings back part of his treasure for Giles and helps him defend it in revolve against the undeserving king.

 Glaurung -
Glaurung was a very powerful and cunning dragon, and he at times used his abilities to achieve his desired ends without resorting to direct physical violence (at which he was equally proficient).
It is likely that he is the dragon that appears in Tolkien's poem "The Hoard" in The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, which seems to be based on the events at Nargothrond.
He was bred by Morgoth from some unknown stock and was the first dragon to appear outside of Angband.

A better dragon representation would be something like an El (X), except that its shooting range would be only 200p, not 500p; however it would not be killed by light troops by merely being beaten, it would have to be doubled.
Another approach, perhaps better still, would be to count a dragon as sme sort of WWg (S) that could contact enemy any enemy, in the same way that (under DBM v3.0) WWg (X) can.
In particular, a dragon isn't really exactly like a Khmer elephant with a bolt-shooter mounted on the back!

 The Barrow-Downs
The few dragons who survived the War of Wrath and the downfall of Morgoth and his stronghold, removed to scarcely inhabitated regions in the north and north-east of Middle-Earth.
Often also named drakes (Old English), worms or wyrms there, dragons in Middle-Earth, are, however, exclusively evil creatures; created or bred by Morgoth, the primeval Dark Lord, in the pits of Angband in the First Age.
In order to slay a dragon in Middle-Earth, it needed a wretched hero, bound to and chosen by fate, armed with a legacy, magic weaponry and not seldom a fey spirit, who would face the beast alone, often meeting his own doom in the encounter.

One Risus to Rule Them All...
For instance, since they have many unique powers and abilities attributed to their form, a dragon in Middle-earth can be an appropriate monster cliché.
Such is the case of Sauron, greatest of the Maiar on Middle-earth who was driven back again and again over the ages and who ever seeks to increase his power and influence over the world.
This would certainly makes sense since the Dragon cliché adequately encompasses a number of spectacular abilities such as knowledge, strength and extra senses as expressed on the “funky dice” target chart.

Sated Beast has obvious uses as a sideboard card, held in reserve in case Middle Earth starts filling up with hungry hunting dragons.
Against the weaker at-home manifestations, like Leucaruth and Bairanax, Sated Beast reduces the attack to only one strike--meaning, of course, the dragon will only get one chance to pass his body roll.
Along with other cards like The Old Thrush and Arrows Shorn of Ebony, Sated Beast is a BIG help when you're trying to defeat an At Home manifestation of dragon, thus paving the way for King of the Mountain and Returned Exiles.

Among the Dwarves in The Hobbit, Balin was the second-eldest Dwarf on the quest (behind Thorin), and so he spoke for the party when they were captured by the Elvenking.

History of the Lake Town & Shire
It's true that there were still a few goblins, orcs, trolls, and even the occasional dragon roaming the wilder parts of the land, but the men, the elves, the dwarves, and of course the hobbits controlled most of the land and kept it safe for decent folk.
Meanwhile, the dwarves laid rail from Moria to Longbottom in the Shire and to Bree.
One of the peculiarities with the way our time is connected with the past that was Middle Earth is that the end of the Great War of the Rings overlaps in places with what we know as the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
