I ran the main dealership for Dragon 32 in Wales in 1982.
Dragon Data was hailed as a "High Tech" success when the machines started selling, although they were substantially funded from local government and were the subject of many local media station stories.

 Dragon 32/64 - Definition, explanation
In terms of raw computational power, the Dragon beat most of its contemporary rivals (which were based on the older MOS Technology 6502 and Zilog Z80) but this made little difference in a market where graphical capabilities were much more important to consumers.
Numerous peripherals existed for the Dragon 32/64, and on top of this there were add-ons such as the Dragon's Claw which gave the Dragons access to the BBC Micro's large range of accessories (a particularly important factor in the UK home market).
A minor difference between the two Dragon models was the outer case color; the Dragon 32 was beige and the 64 was light grey.

Dragon Data weren't too worried as it wasn't in their interests to have too many retailers competing on price, and with the capacity at the plant not large enough for demand others were only receiving a restricted allocation.
Dragon Data announced that the 32 would be launched in the US that year, and after discussion with three interested American companies it would be manufactured in the US for economic reasons as a joint venture with the chosen US company.
Dragon Data's policy on recovering the huge licensing fee payable to the owners was the "pile it high and sell it cheap" method; their thinking that it was better to get lots of cheap sales than few expensive.

The Dragon 32 was introduced at the end of 1982.
The later published operating system for the Dragon, OS/9, was also remarkable because it appears years later as OS/9 68K for the Atari ST. The Dragon 64 (picture) had a different case, the extended memory and a RS232-C-Interface built-in.
The Dragon 32 was a revolutionary design - for the UK at least - in that it broke away from tradition and offered a Motorola 6809 microprocessor at its heart instead of the more popular, but less powerful, Zilog Z80 and Mostek 6502 ICs.

In the early 1980s Dragon Computer Systems introduced the Dragon 32 in Europe to some reasonable success.
The Dragon 32 in my collection came with a few accessories including Joysticks and a little software but I'll be unable to test it out until I get a converter that allows me to plug it in.
The 32 was my first computer smuggeled in from the UK because they were too expensive in Norway in 1982.

Dragon's own word processor, although not WYSIWYG was very powerful as it had a feature whereby it was possible to program the printer directly via escape codes and thus any feature the printer had could be exploited.
Dragons were able to connect to bulletin board systems (BBSs) where it was possible to read and post messages to other users and download software or files, and they could also connect to the Prestel system, which was a forerunner to the Web and was essentially like an online teletext system.

At first sight the new Dragon 64 looks just like the well established Dragon 32 as the same case and keyboard are used, although the case is grey instead of beige (to indicate the enormous memory' perhaps?) and the number on the logo has changed.
The reason for this is that Dragon Data has taken care to ensure that the new model is as compatible as possible with the old and hen you first fire up the 64 you are running a machine which is configured as a Dragon 32.
Dragon Data says there will be no problems with any of their own software and a quick check of a range of independent offerings did not reveal any difficulties.

Dragon 32 was almost a complete clone of the Tandy Color Computer TRS-80.
There was also an upgrade board availble for converting the 32 to 64k.
Like many home computers the dragon 32 had an extensive range of games available all of varying quality.

DRAGON DATA has refused to accept the challenge offered by newer arrivals on the market such as the Electron or the Elan and instead of producing a new machine has concentrated on enhancing its old one.
For instance Dragon Data with its Compuvoice cassette showed how easy it was to have a speech synthesiser when most other computers need a dedicated chip.
The Dragon 64 is really a Dragon 32 with extra memory, an RS-232 port and auto-repeat on the keyboard.

DREaM is a Dragon 32, Dragon 64 and Tandy CoCo II emulator for the Amiga written by Sean Siford.

The DRAGON 32 enjoyed a pretty good success in Europe.
However, the Dragon did have at least two advantages over the first TRS-80 Color computer: A typewriter-style keyboard that was somewhat better than the tandy's calculator-like keys; and a Centronics parallel-printer port.
Two years later, Welsh launched the DRAGON 64 which has the same characteristics except the added memory (64k RAM instead of 32k), a RS232c port and minor ROM changes.
