Series Info: D Section: Dragon Ball Series
Dragon Ball was originally a comic that was serialized in the magazine, Shuukan Shonen Jump, or Weekly Boy's Jump starting in 1984.
The TV series, which basically followed the book series but adding in more detail and some new plot, was initially called Dragon Ball and then was renamed Dragon Ball Z after Goku defeated Evil Piccolo Jr.
At this junction, the TV series is renamed Dragon Ball Z. In addition, at this time, we find out that Goku has a son, Gohan (named after his step father).

The plot is a bit more personal than Dragon Warriors 1 and 2 (with every successive DW game, the plot seems to get better and better), especially with the added feature in the beginning where the light goddess from Alefgard asks you moral questions and sees how you answer them.

Various good and bad characters arose in the series, but outside of Baramos and his coward-bully servant Moor, most of the regulars characters were "good." There was Abel's close pal MocoMoco, who was larger than Abel but not quite as athletic.
Then there was Daisy, described by a Dragon Warrior press release as a "macho miss," who was then introduced in "Level 4: Girl Warrior Daisy." And for humor's sake, there was Janac the wizard, a mustachioed, pipe-puffing old soak with not a few eccentric character flaws.
Sadly, the series was vanquished after six months because of generally weak timeslots (most independent stations, overloaded with product in 1990, shunted the series to the least accessible of the Sunday-morning hours) and an overall drop of public interest in the original Nintendo videogame.

Dragon Ball article by P. Duffield
The departure from DRAGON BALL's original comedy-oriented story to the more serious, battle-oriented series it had become was highlighted with the beginning of the second series, DRAGON BALL Z. Viewers didn't have to wait between the two; DRAGON BALL Z started April 26, 1989, exactly one week after the end of DRAGON BALL.
DRAGON BALL Z was immediately followed by a series independent of the comic, DRAGON BALL GT, which ran for 64 episodes, until November 19, 1997.
DRAGON BALL is not a phenomenon limited to Japan and the US, a simple fact to which any of our readers who are from other countries or speak other languages can likely attest.
