 RPGamer > Re-Retroview > Dragon Warrior IV
Two years later, the title reached American shores as Dragon Warrior IV, and was the last in the series to come to U.S. shores in a while, not to mention the last title in the franchise to grace the NES.
Dragon Warrior IV has pretty much the same generic turn-based offering as its predecessors, albeit with the A.I. completely controlling your allies in the fifth chapter, and speaking of that, the chapter system was an interesting break from the norm for the franchise.
As I've said before, the fourth Dragon Warrior features a chapter system unique in its time, where you briefly play the hero or heroine's allies in their lands before you finally gain control of the protagonist several hours into the game.

 Dragon Warrior IV
Of course, by the time Dragon Warrior IV saw a release in North America, less people played games in that series than when it first began.
You fight enemies with a turn-based combat system where you can attack, use items, etc. One of the tenants of the Dragon Warrior games is that spells damage or heal for a specific amount, and your characters can only defend against them with magic blocking spells and equipment.
The thing that sets the game apart from other Tactical/Adventure games on the NES is that while you control the seven supporting characters in their parts of the game, these characters come under the control of the game’s AI when you assume the role of the hero.

 Dragon Warrior VII - GameCritics.com
Although the Dragon Warrior series does maintain a linear fiction of sorts, DW7 is an independent story that should not be mistaken for a continuation of Dragon Warrior IV, the last game of the cardinal series that actually came out here.
(Incidentally, IVs story was resolved in V and VI which never saw American release.) DW7 opens in a small fishing village on the coast of an island, or I should say the island since it is the only island in the world.
In this bright and tranquil setting you are introduced to three friends: Keifer, a prince of the only castle on the island; Maribel, the daughter of a wealthy shipwright, and a third character, the son of a local fisherman, whom you play and get to name.
