China and the US agreed last week on a doubling of passenger flights and an effective 'open skies' policy for cargo services between their two countries, in what is seen as an important step-forward for airline market into China.
The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines, which includes many of the big players in the China cargo sector such as Cathay Pacific, has reported a fall in utilisation rates, with demand in April 2007 increasing by 0.7% but capacity increasing by 3.3%, leading a fall in 'load factor' of 1.7% to 66%.
As well as bringing Dragonair into the Cathay Pacific family, the shareholding restructuring will also result in a much closer partnership between Cathay Pacific and Air China, with the two airlines increasing their cross-shareholding and beginning work to increase co-operation in a number of key areas.

Dragonair flew 3,692,930 passengers in the first three quarters of the year, a jump of 11% over the same period last year, while air cargo shipments climbed 15.8% to 278,301 tons in the first nine months of the year when compared with January-September 2004.
Dragonair Cargo is now one of the major revenue sources for the airline, accounting for a significant portion of total company turnover.
Dragonair all-cargo operations have grown rapidly since they were inaugurated in the summer of 2000.
