Dragonfly - a Movie Review of The Phantom Tollbooth
The dragonfly, the insect and symbol his wife intimately adopted as her own, is mysteriously etched on the skin of their newborn baby daughter.
Of particular importance is the manner in which the movie metaphorically juxtaposes the symbols of dragonfly and crucifix.
Above all else, the movie, Dragonfly, serves the possibly unintended function of resurrecting a dialogue that should never die, especially in the post 9/11 age, the age of fear.

SPLICEDwire | "Dragonfly" review (2002) Tom Shadyac, Kevin Costner
Dragonflies -- a bug with which his beloved felt a spirit-animal connection -- start banging against the windows of his spooky old house (with its unreliable lamps and looming, shadowy trees).
"Dragonfly" has a good hook in discovering this untapped niche within the twisty-plot ghost story genre, and while Shadyac depends too heavily on the film's jump-inducing score as a cattle prod to push the chills, the fact is the chills are there.
As the climax draws near, "Dragonfly" becomes even more blunt as the apparent ghost of Joe's wife develops an affinity for cartography, revealing one of the film's central clues to be both annoyingly arbitrary and ludicrously literal.

Entertainment Ave! The Movie Theater - A movie review of Dragonfly.
The problem with "Dragonfly" isn’t that it is a bad movie, I think it’s just that it tries too hard to push this message of Doctor Joe getting a message from beyond.
Costner does his best to pull of the role, but as the movie became more of a joke than something I could take seriously, well, it was almost too bad his performance was wasted, as well as that of Kathy Bates as his lawyer/neighbor, trying to help Joe through his wife’s death.
The movie went for cheap "shock-factor" things, like the little boy, dead on the table, suddenly opening his eyes, and it really didn’t need to because the story was already there.

The movie made a pile of money, but it was the first time his star became tarnished.
I also liked the little clues the filmmakers leave throughout the movie as to what really happened to Joe's wife and why she is haunting him now.
I am sure Dragonfly will draw many comparisons (both fair and unfair) with The Sixth Sense and The Others, but the film is less about frights and shocking plot twists, and more about one man's search for the truth and his journey towards faith.

I even liked him in "Dragonfly." He plays doctor Joe Darrow in a Chicago hospital to which he commutes from his home in, I believe, Evanston, Illinois.
The movie makes it explicit that Dr. Joe is not a believer in the hereafter.
Instead, the movie joins the bandwagon of gauche supernatural pictures whose only virtue (for those who concoct them) is box-office revenue.

You also learn from the trailer and movie that dragonflies were Emily’s thing, and now they start appearing everywhere to Joe.
The main thing I remember about the movie was that the film is just rather dark, especially the hospital where you know that in real life they keep all the rooms well lit (except those little chapels).

Dragonfly Movie Review at Hollywood Video
But Dragonfly fails as a thriller for two reasons: First, Thompson (and the script) convey Emily as a beautiful, blond living saint who truly loved her husband — which makes her about as threatening as the dragonfly birthmark on her back.
But more at the heart of the matter is the fact that it feels like Shadyac and writers David Seltzer, Brandon Camp, and Mike Thompson shoe-horned the scary scenes into the movie in an attempt to make it more than it is: a drama about grief, death, and spiritual connections.
Dragonfly would have perhaps been more compelling as a thoughtful reflection on spirituality (provided it didn't turn into a What Dreams May Come sap-fest) than as a "scary" movie packed with forced shocks.

The couple is living a good life when Emily decides to leave the country and go down to the jungles of South America to do some humanitarian work, all this while she's in her second trimester of pregnancy.
Movies like Dragonfly never really gives you any reason to doubt that someone's trying to speak from beyond the grave.
There is nothing special here that we haven't seen before, and after setting up Emily's pregnancy before her death, it becomes grossly obvious why she's trying to reach him and direct him back to the South American jungle where she perished.

For that matter, after a slow and not very effective opening, the movie settles into a middle section that works well enough to hold your attention, before falling apart in a sea of dubious mysticism and worse writing by the end.

Movie Review - Dragonfly - www.ericdsnider.com - The Official Website of Eric D. Snider
I'm not sure which half of "Dragonfly" is worse: The part where nothing's happening, or the part where something's happening, but it's stupid.
In fact, after the very first sign of a dragonfly, he begins to assume supernatural involvement -- a leap of logic that would be out of place in a more sensible movie, but which seems quite reasonable in this sloppily written slab.
Instead of just speaking her mind, dead Emily prefers to give cryptic clues and symbols, suggesting she does not want Joe to find spiritual enlightenment so much as she wants him to go on a scavenger hunt.

CANOE -- JAM! Movies - Dragonfly Review - Dragonfly can't get off the ground
The pace of the film is off and the story is flat; clues are planted in an obvious fashion and then visually underlined, but you'll have to see the movie for yourself to understand what that means, for all who see Dragonfly are sworn to secrecy as to the details.
For this viewer, the dragonfly in the ointment is the script, the script and the script, jammed as it is with stuff that seems thrown in there just to be on the safe side.
Moreover, everything in Dragonfly relies upon a viewer's belief in the emotional bond between Costner and his dead wife, and that is never very well established.
