Pern - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pern is a fictional planet in the universe created by science fiction writer Anne McCaffrey for her Dragonriders of Pern series of novels.
Pern is subject to periodic attack from space by the destructive Thread, a spaceborne spore that destroys everything organic it touches.
Pern is host to a number of invertebrate species, including the insect-like trundlebugs, rollers (analogous to a woodlouse), VTOLS (a kind of fly) and springs (a kind of parasite).

Dragonriders of Pern - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dragonriders are an elite class, chosen for their ability to communicate with the giant sentient dragons, bred by the early Earth-colonizers of Pern to chew firestone and burn in the air the deadly mycorrhizoid spore Thread that periodically rain down on the planet due to the orbit of the Red Star.
The social structure on Pern is strictly divided between Hold, Hall and Weyr--broadly comparable to the medieval triune of Nobility, Guild and Church (in that order)--and is considered by the Pernese themselves to be an ideal organization specifically meant to avoid the violence and excess of their Terran ancestors.
Pern created an interesting example in that it is an agrarian society portrayed without a considerable organized religion.

An Introduction to Anne McCaffrey's Pern
Pern is an earth-like planet settled by humans who wished to escape a war-torn, space-faring society by setting up a low-tech agrarian colony in a remote sector of the galaxy.
The structure of Pern's society developed over the years to one well-suited to support the dragons and riders, freeing them to protect the planet's population from Threadfall.
The return of the Red Star threatens disaster for Pern, unless a strong-willed woman can be found before the last golden egg hatches, and a young, visionary man can find a way to unite and lead his fellow dragonriders.

Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series is a classic of fantasy, bringing together dragons (favorites of fantasy readers), danger to an entire world, and characters that are both stimulating and enchanting.
Dragonriders are reviled and seen as parasites on society -- and no one believes that Thread will return, except for F'lar, one of the few remaining dragonriders.
However, it is not until experiencing their first Threadfall that they realize how woefully unprepared the Weyr is. Despite the best efforts of everyone on Pern, and the lucky mistake that teaches dragonriders how to travel through time, there are still not enough men or dragons to protect all of Pern.

When men first settled on Rukbat's third planet and called it Pern, they had taken little notice of the stranger planet, swinging around its adopted primary in a wildly erratic orbit-- until the desperate path of the wanderer brought it close to its stepsister at perihelion.
When such aspects were harmonious, and not distorted by conjunctions with other planets in the system, the wanderer brought in a life form that sought to bridge the space gap to the more temperate and hospitable planet.
However, in both Holds and Weyrs, there were masses of reports, journals, maps, and charts to remind the Lords and Weyrleaders of the problem; and much advice to assist their descendants when next the rogue planet approached Pern and how to prepare for the incursion.
