Dragonslayer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dragonslayer is a 1981 fantasy movie set in a realistically portrayed medieval Britain.
McDiarmid's next film role after Dragonslayer would be that of the frightening villain Palpatine in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, a role which he would reprise for The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith.
Dragonslayer is set apart from other fantasy films by its historical accuracy in costume and set design, as well as by a script and performances that attempt to accurately portray Britain at the turning point between paganism and Christianity.

 Filmtracks: Dragonslayer (Alex North)
Dragonslayer: (Alex North) When you look back at the sword and sorcery age in Hollywood (otherwise known as the early to mid-1980's), it's hard to figure out exactly what drew so many people to that particular fascination with fantasy all in one short term.
On album, Dragonslayer was originally released on an LP with the ridiculous statement: "never to be re-released in any medium." Well, in 1990, Soundtrack Collector's Special Editions (SCSE) made fools of the label by releasing the score on CD as the third of their original five products of the early 1990's.
Overall, this score and its albums are a mess, and despite the genuine size and scope of North's music for Dragonslayer, the veteran failed to grasp the necessities of the genre and wrote an inappropriate and unsatisfying score for the picture.

 DVD Review: Dragonslayer
Dragonslayer is a film that I also loved as a kid, and in watching it again, I gained new respect for it.
Given that Dragonslayer came onto the scene rather quietly in 1981, and left in much the same way, it may very well be that there simply isn't anything left.
Dragonslayer has aged surprisingly well and it was a pleasant surprise to find that I was as entertained by it now as I was when I was a kid.

Dragonslayer is about a young sorcerers apprentice called Galen (Peter McNicol), who after the demise of his master travels to the land of Urland to rid it of an evil dragon.
Ultimately, "Dragonslayer" succeeds where the vast majority of monster movies fail, which is the point at which you get to see the creature and it is a big disappointment.

 Dragonslayer (1981)
Dragonslayer isn’t in a league with the Spielberg classic, but the fairly engaging little fable deserved a better fate than its poor box office take.
Dragonslayer appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 2.35:1 on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; the image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.
The soundtrack of Dragonslayer didn’t quite match up with the highs heard during another 1981 action flick, but it seemed very good.

 'Dragonslayer' - Laserdisc Review [SMR]
'Dragonslayer' is, without a doubt, one of the best of a genre that historically does poorly on film.
Much of 'Dragonslayer' takes place at night, in a dark, dank castle or a dark, dank cave and is lit to appear as if by torch light.
From the opening sequence starting with a single torch and lightening to show the band of villagers in silhouette against the pale blue of the early dawn sky, it is immediately apparent that 'Dragonslayer' will finally be seen in some semblance of it's original form.

DRAGONSLAYER is an extremely well crafted film, which has strengths on several levels.
DRAGONSLAYER benefits from having a rather plain-looking cast as opposed to the Brat Pack types that were annoyingly popular at the time of filming.
DRAGONSLAYER offers a better script, superior acting, and an air of authenticity that few modern filmmakers can touch (with the exception perhaps of Peter Jackson).

 dOc DVD Review: Dragonslayer (1981)
Dragonslayer provides a sloppy and surprisingly dull tale that only rarely moves beyond its generic conventions.
A good fantasy almost always needs a love story, and Dragonslayer includes one with Galen and Valerian (Caitlan Clarke), who initially appears dressed as a man. Once she changes into a dress and they exchange some furtive glances, love happens with hardly an explanation.
Dragonslayer has been given cult status over the years and is considered by a surprising number of fantasy fans as one of the great films in the genre.

 Dragonslayer Sniper Claims Sixth Victim
SHARN—The mysterious crossbow sniper known to the City Watch as the “Dragonslayer” shot and killed a high-ranking member of House Kundarak on Far night, then posted handbills taunting the inability of the authorities to stop the sniper attacks.
The attack, made at dusk as the victim left a restaurant on Bruneau Street in Korranath, bore the hallmarks of previous attacks: a single magic crossbow bolt shot from a great distance and a corona of fire around the victim that scorches the ground, leaving a fl outline around the corpse.
Watch Commander Belew Yorgan expressed confidence that the Dragonslayer would soon be brought to justice, either by the city watch or by House Deneith’s Sentinel Marshals.

By today's standards, Dragonslayer seems relatively benign, especially in comparison to the startling, graphic imagery of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films.
And for devotees of great acting, Dragonslayer features one of the final screen performances of the legendary Ralph Richardson, who effortlessly steals the film as a wily sorcerer.
As the film opens, a group of villagers led by the "boy" Valerian (Caitlin Clarke) arrive at Ulrich's mist-shrouded castle with an unusual request.

Despite its box-office failure in 1981, Dragonslayer was gradually recognized as one of the finest fantasies to emerge from the post-Star Wars boom in special effects.
All the hype about this movie is correct: The storyline, about a young man taking the place of dragonslayer, is clever, the special effects are superb (the dragon may haunt my dreams), and the scenery is positively magnificent.
But, above all, Dragonslayer is a moral tale about a student paying the cost to be the master and fully realizing that in all beneficial ways.

The makers of Dragonslayer have wisely back-loaded the movie's best elements at the end of the film--it goes out with a bang (literally), though they haven't followed Sam Arkoff's advice of providing a great first reel to go with a great last reel (what's in between, according to Arkoff, doesn't matter).

Dragonslayer begins with a delegation of peasants from the kingdom of Urland arriving at the home of Ulric (Ralph Richardson, who played God in Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits earlier the same year), apparently the last wizard in the world.

When thinking of good fantasy, Dragonslayer never comes to mind, but when coming across it on TV, it's always worth watching.
Dragonslayer has the kind of story that everyone thinks of when it comes to fantasy: young boy/man learning to be a warrior, or in this case a wizard, must defeat the evil dragon and save the girl.
What this movie gets right that so many other fantasy movies get wrong is that it doesn't try too much.
