Dragutin Lerman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dragutin Lerman (August 24, 1863 - July 12, 1918) was a Croatian explorer.
Lerman provided inspiration for two additional explorers (Mirko and Stjepan Seljan) who were mapping Africa and South America at the turn of the 20th century.
A big part of the collection that Lerman brought home from the Congo, 493 artifacts, was donated to the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb and has been part of the permanent exhibition ever since.

Mirko and Stjepan Seljan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
By 1898, the older Mirko was already known as the Champion of Globetrotters because he had walked the huge distance between Paris in France and Saint Petersburg in Russia.
It is believed that the brothers started the journey after being impressed by the books or lectures of another Croatian explorer, Dragutin Lerman, who was in Africa as one of the leaders of Henry Morton Stanley's team.
The theory that the influence, support, and encouragement of the Russian government, which was interested in Africa at the time, also had an effect cannot be denied.

In later years he spent much energy defending himself against charges that his African expeditions had been marked by callous violence and brutality remarkable even in that violent continent.

Artifacts brought home to Croatia were donated to Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb.

In the 1882-1896 period, he had lived and worked, with some interruptions, in the then Belgian Congo, where he had collected a considerable number of valuable authentic items which he later donated to the National Museum.
As particularly valuable items, which are a true match to similar exhibits found in related European museums in terms of their cultural and historic significance, as well as their artistic expression, we may mention numerous wooden sculptures, arms, clothes, utility objects, and musical instruments.
Among other things, Lerman was a member of Henry Morton Stanley's expedition.
