  Bay Area Hiker: Estero Trailhead
Continue on Sir Francis Drake about 7.5 more miles, and turn left at the sign "Estero Trail." Drive slowly (there may be cows on this narrow road) about 1 more mile to the trailhead on the right side of the road.
Estero is one of the loneliest trailheads at Point Reyes, and seems to get the most use from locals.
As Estero Trail nears the bay, the path curves to the left near a sign warning that marine mammals are protected by federal laws (elephant and harbor seals breed and give birth on the shores of Point Reyes in the winter).

Drakes Estero, in Point Reyes National Seashore, is the only estuary in California designated to become a wilderness area - when the oyster farm that now uses it moves.
Evidence from Native American shellmounds indicates that the Estero never had significant numbers of native oysters; the original complex of native shellfish species should be restored.
But in 2005, when Drakes Oyster bought the operation, the new owner acknowledged there were only seven more years on its lease, and assured the Sierra Club that the operation could make back its investment by 2012.

Point Reyes and Drakes Bay are mainly associated with the great Spanish explorers of the Pacific coast during the 16th and 17th centuries, though Miwok Indians had lived for centuries before on the peninsula where Point Reyes is situated.
At Drakes Bay, in 1595, the Spanish explorer Sebastián Rodriguez Cermeño suffered the first recorded shipwreck in California waters when his Manila galleon, the San Agustín, was blown ashore near the mouth of Drakes Estero, which adjoins Drakes Bay.
Drakes Bay, California, well known to Spanish explorers of the 16th and 17th centuries, may have been a landing place of the Englishman Sir Francis Drake in 1579 during his circumnavigation of the globe.

After a few hours we crossed in front of the mouth of the estero (that's estuary for our latin challenged readers) and decided to do a short kayak drag rather than get too close to the mouth during an ebbing tide in unfamiliar terrain.
The estero has several large sea lion colonies and we were able to quietly slip by them on the other side of the channel with out disturbing them and sending them crashing into the water, or, considering the location there may have been a white shark in the area.

In an exciting discovery that confirms that Sir Francis Drake landed in Drake’s Estero on Point Reyes in the summer of 1579, a trio of historians on Monday revealed that the configuration of sand spits at the mouth of the estuary have completed a miraculous 54-year cycle.
The name was first used by the crew of the of the Golden Hind, who used the cove for a place protected from high seas to turn the ship on its side and caulk the wood-beam hull.
Written accounts of Drake’s voyage note that while the captain was searching for a harbor to do the careen and gather supplies for his subsequent cross-Pacific voyage, he noted a "faire and good Baye" at the 38th parallel, the exact latitude of the Point Reyes peninsula.
