Dram (unit) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The dram is the mass of 1/256 pound avoirdupois and 1/16 ounce.
The dram (symbol: ʒ) was also the mass of 1/96 pound (℔) or 1/8 ounce (℥) in the apothecaries' system that survived until the middle of the 20th century in English-speaking countries.
Thus, it was equal to 3.888 grams (in the SI).

 The Linley Group
A DRAM chip uses about half its power just to transmit data; an equal amount of power is used at the other end of the connection.
Thus, embedded DRAM can reduce system power by about the total amount of power used by the DRAM chips, even though that same amount of memory is now inside the ASIC.
Thus, embedded DRAM is most effective when adding moderate amounts of memory to an ASIC; it cannot offer the same capacity as a standard DRAM chip.

 SAMSUNG's Digital World - Semiconductor | Sync/Async DRAM
Conventional DRAM is operated by a separate controller that is independent from computer system operation, which makes it difficult to keep pace with the advancement of higher speed CPUs.
However, synchronous DRAM is designed to process data at the same speed as the system clock (time controller which generates periodic signals) that controls the CPU.
Therefore, synchronous DRAM is regarded as the core component that is advantageous for high speed processing of large volume data.

Since a DRAM cell is destructive, in that it cannot recover data once it is discharged, the full amount of the signal must to be written back to the memory cell at the slow RC time constant.
A dram macro is a combination of a DRAM array and the necessary support circuits to form a functional memory unit with a smaller memory granularity for integration.
Cache DRAM (CDRAM) is a development that has a localized, on chip cache with a wide internal bus composed of two sets of static data transfer buffers between cache and DRAM.

The difference in the DRAM market is that the SDRAM is not quietly going away as the DDR becomes the volume leader in the PC segment.
Despite the massive increase in PC volumes for this year and the third quarter price increases, the higher memory densities that are currently available have held down the number of DRAM units that shipped.
The DRAM industry's competitive landscape is poised to change through the development of 300mm fabs.

New DRAMs Shake Up Wafer Probe
Semico Research in Phoenix, AZ, predicts that by 2005, DRAM consumption by these communications and consumer applications will grow at nearly double the rate of the computer-related applications, achieving nearly 55% of the market by 2005 (Figure 1).
Minimizing test time per wafer in today’s rapidly changing DRAM probe market means that the test-system’s fail capture and analysis capabilities must advance to previously unattainable levels in terms of speed and capacity, configurability, and cost.
The result is a DRAM probe architecture that supports testing at speeds up to 250 MHz for devices as large as 2 Gb.

Review of Accelerated Testing of SRAMs
Originally, dRAM memory chips consisted of a single transistor with a bit-line controlling the source and a word-line controlling the gate.
After the introduction of 1Mb dRAM chips in 1989, there was no longer space to allow 4Mb on the chip, so manufacturers were forced to incorporate three-dimensional structures into their cell designs.
The reduction of the active volume of dRAMs is unique with this CMOS device since the newer cell designs shown in Figure 1 eliminate funneling of charge from the substrate (to be discussed later concerning sRAMs).

DRAM price collapse not a sign of PC problems | InfoWorld | News | 2005-11-23 | By Dan Nystedt, IDG News Service   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
It's a yearly trend that has again arrived, and DRAM prices should continue downward for the next few weeks since companies throughout the PC supply chain are under growing pressure to sell off excess inventory, according to DRAMeXchange Technology, an industry researcher.
The DRAM market behavior is normal for this time of year because retailers have nearly finished stocking their shelves with PCs and laptops ahead of the holidays.
One point it does reflect is the high volume of PCs being sold to users in emerging markets, where PC assemblers tend to add as little DRAM as possible since cost is a high concern, analysts say.

Compared with the results for the previous week (which show the 30-day moving average ending on June 21), the prices remained the same in North America, yet were down by 4.06 per cent in Europe and by 4.49 per cent in Asia.
The researcher says, the "30-day moving average prices" of 128Mb DRAMs (PC133, 16M x 8) for large-volume users during the period were $3.13 in North America, $4.14 in Europe and $3.85 in Asia.

Denser memory options propel system performance   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
To meet those challenges, DRAM suppliers are developing faster memory architectures, denser chips and new system interfaces that will boost system throughput while allowing users to add much more memory to systems.
The best DDR2 DRAMs now in production, by contrast, operate at 400 MHz, although work is progressing on an extension to the DDR2 road map to add a 533-MHz speed grade for use in systems with 1,066-MHz front-side buses.
Depending on the generation of DRAM used on the modules, this limits the maximum memory capacity per memory channel to 2 Gbytes with 512-Mbit chips, 4 Gbytes with 1-Gbit devices and up to 8 Gbytes when the forthcoming 2-Gbit DRAMs are deployed.

ITworld.com - Memory makers ready to ramp DDR SDRAM
The big question at the one-day conference was when the memory suppliers would be able to reach their stated goal of reaching pricing parity between DDR SDRAM and the SDRAM chips found in most of today's computers.
New generations of DRAM have historically never been widely accepted by the market until they were sold at the same price as the previous generation, noted Mailloux, which is why the company wants to drive adoption of DDR SDRAM by reaching pricing parity as quickly as possible.
But once Intel and other suppliers launch Pentium 4 chip sets that support SDRAM and DDR SDRAM for use in mainstream desktop PCs, the higher cost of RDRAM is likely to make it attractive only for end-users looking for the highest performance available, he added.
