In that respect, Yes were as much the successors to the Moody Blues, with a beat and balls in place of the pioneering art rock/psychedelic band's stateliness and overt seriousness, as they were to Iron Butterfly.
Wakeman's original plan was to assist the group in the studio on their new album, but the sessions proved so productive that he made the decision, fully supported by the band, to return to the band's lineup permanently.
Yes was invisible for nearly two years after that, until the late 1987 release of The Big Generator, which performed only moderately well.

 Yes | Biography | MTV
It was with the release of The Yes Album in April of 1971 that the public began to glimpse the group's full potential.
The album's success was enhanced by the release of an edited single of "Roundabout," the group's first (and, for over a decade, only) major hit, which reached number 13 on the U.S. charts.
This configuration recorded a new album, Drama, which was released in August of 1980; rather ominously, this record did dramatically better in England, reaching the number two spot, than it did in America, where it got no higher than number 18.

Yes are legends of classic rock, and this little masterpiece of an album is where it all began.
This album has few but unmistakable instances of brilliance, and even this early on, it was quite apparent that this group--after they gained some experience--could rise to monumental heights.
Yes was still experimenting with their sound when this album was recorded in 1969.

 Yes
A major sidelight to the Yes story is the solo career of Rick Wakeman, who vied with Keith Emerson for the title of hottest 70s prog rock keyboard player, and sold almost as many records as Yes did during his mid-70s commercial peak.
Yes finally went back to standard-length pop songs this time around; it was their last gold record until 90125.
Yes' big "comeback" record, it features their only American #1 hit single ever: the thoroughly mushy and annoying up-tempo harmony-fest "Owner Of A Lonely Heart." The funky follow-up single "Leave It" also hit the Top 40, and "It Can Happen" was all over the airwaves.

 MSJ - Yes-Drama
In 1980 when Yes found themselves without their keyboardist (Rick Wakeman) and vocalist (Jon Anderson), they turned to their manager Brian Lane to see if he had any suggestions.
As luck would have it they were also huge Yes fans, and jumped at the chance, they thought, to have their heroes record a song or two of theirs.
In many ways the songs here are vast departures for Yes music, but as part of the paradox of this disc, Steve Howe's guitar and Chris Squire's bass work are both featured more heavily than on most of the other music in the catalog.

Drama (Yes album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Drama is the tenth studio album by British progressive rock group Yes.
Perhaps to ensure that some of the old glory was there, Roger Dean was commissioned to design his first Yes cover in five years, and Eddie Offord, who had co-produced the band in their 1971-1974 heydey, returned to the studio for assistance.
Drama fared well in the UK charts, reaching #2 there, but American audiences were not so sure, with Drama becoming Yes's first album there in years to not reach the Top 10 or go gold.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Drama
This is the only Yes album without Jon Anderson's guiding hand and it shows in many ways: the good, the bad and the ugly.
Many Yes fans were unimpressed and disgracefully unforgiving of Horn's attempts at live Yes music and the resulting angst left Drama lost and alone wilting in the Yes garden, spelling the end for this short-lived hybrid group.
Drama as a time capsule is as much a part of the early '80s rock sound as The Turn Of A Friendly Card by the Alan Parsons Project.

CD reviews: Expanded and Remastered reissues of "Tormato," "Drama" and "90125"
These are the last three albums from what is generally considered Yes' classic period (late 1960s-early '80s); they are also the last three to be reissued by Rhino in their Expanded and Remastered series, thus bringing it to completion.
What makes this series of interest to most Yes fans is the Expanded end of things, the inclusion of tracks not previously available – especially (on "Drama") some of the never-heard 1979 Paris session that Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman recorded shortly before quitting the band.
"Drama" was, of course, the most controversial of all Yes albums in that lead singer and band co-founder Anderson had left, to be replaced by Trevor Horn – best known as frontman of the Buggles ("Video Killed the Radio Star").

A good album for fans who want it all, but probably not the best one for a new fan or curious listener to start their collection with.
Somewhat overproduced, this album tries to pass itself off as a union of all members into one, but is actually pretty much a mish mosh of songs by two separate bands.

Yes broke up after the "Drama" tour was finished, with everyone splitting up to work on other projects---Horn becoming a producer, Howe and Downes forming the supergroup Asia, and Squire and White teaming up with Trevor Rabin for a project (hint hint), and it looked like Yes were finished for good.
The "Drama" album will always be somewhat of an oddity in the Yes catalogue, for no other reason that it is the only album in Yes' 35 years that does not feature leadsinger Jon Anderson.
I was a big Prog rock fan, as well as a Yes fan back in the seventies, but quit listening as most the prog bands were slowly fading away into the past.

A stunning self-reinvention by a band that many had given up for dead, 90125 is the album that introduced a whole new generation of listeners to Yes.
The album also marked the return of prodigal keyboardist Tony Kaye, whose crisp synth work on "Changes" marked the band's definitive break with its art rock roots.
During their 1970's heyday, Yes was one of the most commercially successful of the prog rock bands.

It was widely assumed that when vocalist/songwriter Jon Anderson left Yes at the end of the '70s, the band was doomed.
And it was downright shocking when the resultant album DRAMA turned out to be a great one.

Legacy reissued several fine albums from roots-rocker Dave Edmunds in 2004, however their finest Edmunds-related CD might well be a rockin’ soundtrack album Edmunds produced for the 1985 comedy film Porky’s Revenge.
More rocking and rootsy Yes than say, Tales From Topographic Oceans or Relayer, the album remains one of the most accessible Yes albums and key FM radio classics like “Don’t Kill The Whale” and the brilliant set-closing “On The Silent Wings Of Freedom” insure it’s essential status.
Despite further albums with Rabin and Kaye in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, the trend would eventually lead Howe back into the fold and that’s where it’s at today.
