The Drama League announced today that John Lithgow, star of Sweet Smell of Success, would be Master of Ceremonies at the 68th Annual Awards Luncheon to be held on Friday, May 10 at 1PM at the Grand Hyatt, 42nd Street and Park Avenue.
Hansen is being honored for her extraordinary stewardship of the organization, which grew nationwide and tenfold during her tenure, and for her founding of The Drama League Directors Project, the nation’s preeminent training program for emerging directors, whose alumni include Christopher Ashley, Mark Brokaw, Michael Mayer, Diane Paulus and John Rando.
The 2002 Distinguished Achievement Award in Musical Theatre will be presented to Elaine Stritch, now starring in her one-woman show, Elaine Stritch at Liberty, which was brought from The Public Theatre to Broadway this season by overwhelming critical acclaim and public demand.

The play is a brilliantly effective spine-chiller about a middle-aged solicitor who hires a theatre and the services of a professional actor to help him re-enact - and hopefully exorcise - a ghostly event that befell him with horrifyingly tragic results.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the original London premiere of this classic thriller, the Wilmington Drama League is staging Dracula through Oct. 30.
Lend Me A Tenor, his directorial debut at the Wilmington Drama League, was voted one of the best local plays of 1992 by the News Journal.
He received rave reviews for his role as James Leeds in the Drama League's production of Children of a Lesser God in 1992 (he learned sign language for that role), and he won a Drama League best supporting actor award in 1993 for his portrayal of the Man Going Back in The Grapes of Wrath.

At the present time, the Nova Scotia Professional Theatre Alliance and the Nova Scotia Drama League are in the process of amalgamating and we expect that amalgamation to be in place by April 1, 2001.
I am representing the Nova Scotia Drama League and we have just been discussing professional theatre, but as we all know, most who enter the realm of professional theatre first get their exposure in community theatre.
The Drama League itself does require funding because we do serve the needs of the community theatre and we support a lot of people across the province in their efforts to put on productions around the province.

The award is named for Elizabeth Hull, a playwright and former production assistant for the Theatre Guild and the Federal Theatre Project, who established the award through her will, and Kate Warriner, an actress and her longtime friend and associate.

Had it not been for the ongoing activities of amateurs between the wars and during WWII, indigenous theatre in the prairies might very well have been a moot point.
Alberta formed the Drama League, in 1929, which became a model for the Dominion Drama Festival.
Too, the creation of Banff Centre for the Arts (by Elizabeth Sterling Haynes - who also helped organize the Drama League - and EA Corbett in 1933) also set the stage for the creation of Albertan artists and a Western dramaturgy.
