Dramarama (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dramarama is a Los Angeles, California-based alternative rock/power pop band that was formed in their native New Jersey in 1982, disbanded in 1994, and formally reunited in 2003, following an appearance on VH1's Bands Reunited reality show, a "where-are-they-now" documentary marking the first time since disbanding that the entire original lineup performed together.
Original bass player/producer and Dramarama cofounder Chris Carter is currently a disc jockey in Los Angeles who's primarily known for hosting America's longest-running Beatle show, "Breakfast With the Beatles", in which he plays nothing but Beatles material and comments upon the history of the Beatles for as long as 4 hours every week.
It included the band's earliest recordings together, songs that were dropped from their early albums, a couple of self-admitted poorly-recorded live performances, and one song exclusive (at the time) to the disc.

At the same time, the band was able to mine pop rock as well as a slightly dirty side of the rock world to create a sound that has lasted for fifteen years as of this writing.
Dramarama has always had a bad habit of including songs that sound uninspired and are passed off as worthy of the rest of their music.
While the band's roots may lie in a bit of the old glitter rock from the 70s as well as a healthy dose of the Beatles, there was also a timeless quality that transcends mainstream and alternative dross.

 NIPP: Artists: Dramarama
Blending hard rock wallop, alternative rock smarts, power pop songcraft, and punk rock urgency, Dramarama was a band who seemed on the verge of a major commercial breakthrough several times during their 11-year career.
As the band was completing their fourth studio album, Vinyl, in 1991, Chameleon Records went bankrupt, and as the band scrambled to come up with the cash to finish the project, the elusive major-label deal finally materialized when Elektra picked up the project.
Dramarama called it a day after a farewell show at Asbury Park’s the Stone Pony in 1994; four years later, John Easdale returned to the music business with a solo album.

Suddenly without a band — his main source of livelihood for more than ten years — Easdale found himself very nearly in the position of the protagonist in his loser anthem, “Work for Food.” The irony was not lost on him.
Dramarama’s excellent body of work — which at its best is as good as that of the similar, more celebrated Replacements — is a testament to the fact that the band was a one hit wonder only in the strictest definition of the term.

Dramarama come out with a disc that flirts with all different brands of rock without unnecessarily pigeonholing themselves into one specific genre.
The sound that Dramarama puts out on disc is one that has been cultivated for a tremendously long period of time; this is perfectly shown in the talent exhibited in every song on “Everybody Dies” and the sheer replay value of the disc.
Especially impressive is the CSNY/Jethro Tull sound that the band throws out at random with their secret track; the forty minutes of “Everybody Dies” speeds through like nothing when such a capable band takes to the studio.

 John Easdale Review
He spent almost 10 years singing and writing songs for his living in Dramarama, a rock band that was always a contender, never a champ in the rock 'n' roll prizefighting ring.
He drew on his background as Dramarama's original drummer, ran his customary acoustic guitar through "a bunch of boxes" to achieve a raucous electric sound and created a one-man band for a good chunk of the recording.
The album is essentially Dramarama by other means: terrific hooks and well-cultivated influences from '60s pure-pop and '70s underground rock, applied to a mixture of mournful ballads and headlong, seething rockers that work out frustrations as they're being voiced.

It's unmistakable Dramarama, but it's tailored for the world in which we live today, a world that's quite a bit different than it was in 1993, when Dramarama's last studio CD was released —different not only for John Easdale, but for all of us as well.
Because the band moved to California in 1985, one fun element of Dramarama's New Jersey shows is that they're often joined onstage by old friends and even former bandmates, so every show is like a mini-reunion, both onstage and in the dressing room.

Dramarama, who earlier this year reunited after a nine-year break, have re-recorded the Dead Kennedy's politically-charged classic "California Uber Alles," with a new set of anti-Arnold Schwartzenegger lyrics reflecting the group's embarrassment at the state of affairs in their adopted home of California.
The new song is available to download as an MP3 on Dramarama frontman John Easdale's Web site (johneasdale.com) and includes lyrics penned by Easdale both mocking the circus that the state's gubernatorial race has become as well as Schwartzenegger's alleged history of sexual misconduct and making comments of admiration about Adolf Hitler.
As for the band, which formed in New Jersey in the early-Eighties, Easdale says that there's a good chance that the reunited Dramarama will convene to record a new album that he had initially plotted as a solo release.
