It was the main town in the plantation of the Drapers' Company of the City of London, which also included nearby Draperstown.
The most notable building in the town is the seventeenth century Springhill, built and owned by the Lenox-Conyngham family but now in the ownership of the National Trust.

Fifteen years later, when the British government placed a stiff tax on alcoholic beverages and when the constabulary clamped down on home distilled Irish whiskey, Kelly's discovery was recalled and exploited to the hilt.
Ether, which was not subject to the tax, was distilled in London and shipped to Draperstown and other places in Northern Ireland by the ton.
A surgeon visiting Draperstown in 1878 remarked that the main street smelled like his surgery, where ether was used as an anesthetic.

Two policemen and a woman were shot in a gun attack at a polling station in Draperstown on 7 June 2001.
A car pulled up outside St Mary's primary school at 9.45pm and a number of shots were fired at the front of the building, hitting two RUC officers on duty and a woman voter.
He said police had limited resources and even though they had some successes in terms of arrests, they needed the public's help to deliver an effective policing service.
