Topic: Drawing manufacturing

In the News (Wed 11 Nov 09)

Drawing (manufacturing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Drawing is a manufacturing process for producing a wire, bar or tube by pulling on a material until it increases in length.
Drawing can also be used to pull metal over a die (male mold) to create a specific shape.
For example, stainless steel kitchen sinks are formed by drawing the stainless steel sheet metal stock over a form (the die) in the shape of the sink.

Fabrication (metal) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fabricator may employ or contract out steel detailers to prepare shop drawings, if not provided by the customer, which the fabricating shop will use to for manufacturing.
Manufacturing engineers will program CNC machines as needed.
The welder then completes welding per the engineering drawings, if welding is detailed, or per his own judgment if no welding details are provided.

Exposure mask manufacturing method, drawing apparatus, semiconductor device manufacturing method, and mask blanks ...
[0010] A photo mask manufacturing process includes a process of drawing a mask pattern on a mask blanks substrate by using a mask drawing apparatus.
The mask drawing apparatus holds the mask blanks substrate so as not to distort the mask blanks substrate as much as possible.
Thus, the mask pattern is drawn in a state that native flatness of the mask blanks substrate is maintained.

DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURABILITY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-29)
Manufacturing knows that it is easier to work on the outside diameter than the inside diameter.
Manufacturing uses computerized estimating to justify this change which it feels will be acceptable to the design engineer because it will lower the manufacturing cost.
Manufacturing feels either 1018 or 1045 are appropriate, less costly substitutes that achieve the designer’s strength and stress goals.

Mechanical engineering other topics - Part numbers vs. Drawing numbers
The drawing number was the filename, and was partly meaningful, of the form ., but the part number was fully meaningful.
The connectivity of part number to drawing needs to be kept in two places, on the drawing and in the PDM (unless the drawing and the PDM are linked) and sometimes a third place, the MRP system.
Manufacturing specs and CAM filenames would be in a database and be shown in the BOM.

Machines & Machining engineering - "manufacturing" drawings ?
It is not usual but not unheard of to create a drawing, especially if the current one is ambiguous, or certain parts of the design are not achievable in the view of the manufacturer.
I would inform them that if they had required a better drawing, that you could have provided them with one and they made a choice to create the drawing that you agreed was up to specs.
Drawings with flat patterns and other aids can hopefully educate the product designers about process limitations and better meet the needs of other people within a manufacturing organization.

A traditional drawing, with dimensions, tolerances, and the familiar title block in the lower right corner, is more than just a pictorial representation of the part to be fabricated.
The drawing was sent to the vendor, who had to interpret those hundreds of dimensions, often spread over multiple pages, and spend weeks entering the information into a CNC machine control application.
The move from the traditional paper drawing to paperless fabrication is inevitable, given the revolutionary gains in efficiency paperless fabrication affords and the increased design sophistication it allows.
