Drawknife - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A drawknife is a woodworking tool used to shape wood.
Although it is called a drawknife, it can also be used with a push-stroke.

They are: a drawknife, for roughing out the form; two spokeshaves, one with a flat sole and the other with a curved sole; and a scraper, for final smoothing.
A drawknife removes much material fast because it can remove large shavings, but it is hard to control for careful detailing.
Then remove the high spots with the drawknife lying flat on the side as in photo 15, and cut down to the line you made with the drawknife at an angle.

Drawknives and Inshaves for log and furniture building
Alternating between a drawknife and the Inshave allows you to work longer with less fatigue because you are using different sets of muscles.
Additionally, we carry Bark Spuds which are often used to remove the bark prior to drawknifing.
This keeps your drawknife sharp longer as you remove the "gritty" bark with the Bark Spud.

The drawknife is among the simplest of tools, just a blade which is pulled across the wood with a slicing motion.
These blanks are trimmed with the drawknife to a rough octagonal shape before they are ready to be mounted on the lathe.
Mostly, it is a follow-up to whatever has been roughly shaped by the drawknife, much as the smooth plane cleans up what the coarser planes have left behind.

Wood Carving Illustrated - How To Magazine for Carvers
The drawknife has been designed with a number of configurations; the typical form offers a long naked blade tapering into narrow ends or tangs.
If the blade is curved in, the drawknife becomes an inshave, which works great for hollowing out or “scooping” work.
Some drawknife enthusiasts put a slight bevel on the back of the blade for extra maneuverability when working with the bevel up.

A drawknife blade is either beveled or flat tapered.
At this point, while the drawknife is still straight, you may want to put it on a belt grinder to remove any hammered in scale, hammer marks, smooth the edges, etc. Also, if, during the forging, you see a cold shut form, grind it out immediately!
Your drawknife should look something like this when it is finished.

The most common method is to use a peeling spud and drawknife combination.
Although many professional log peelers use only a drawknife and a chainsaw and/or grinder for knots, using this tool before you begin to use the drawknife will save you time and energy in the long run and save sharpening time on your drawknife
A drawknife is then used to finish the job before the log is ready to cut.

Sharpening a drawknife is tricky because you must bring the stone to the knife, not vice versa, otherwise the handles get in the way.
Hold the drawknife firmly when you do this, because you will be moving your fingers very close to the edge, and you don't want anything to slip.
One way to hold it is to prop it against a steady object as in photo 8, then apply the stone with some oil on it.
