Opinions 42 - Hitting the Wall IX: Dreadstar (Nov 2000)
Dreadstar, at this point, moved to save a new galaxy from the menace of the Instrumentality and its Lord Papal, the former echoing the Universal Church of Truth and the latter combining salient traits of both Thanos and the Magus.
Originally Dreadstar connected to his powers by means of an ancient sword he could evoke and dismiss, but at a point in his struggle against the Lord Papal, a blow destroyed this implement and the power it represented became a part of Dreadstar's person.
Dreadstar realized, early on, that he had become a goon for a corrupt regime with no particular moral credibility, in spite having overcome the murderous Instrumentality; but that problem resolved itself when Willow merged with the main computer that administered the decadent bean-counting (and misery-generating) policies of the Empirical Galaxy.

Dreadstar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dreadstar was the first comic published by Epic Comics, in 1982.
It was centered on Vanth Dreadstar, sole survivor of the entire Milky Way galaxy, and an ensemble cast of crewmates, including sorcerer Syzygy Darklock, and their struggle to end an ancient war between two powerful, evil empires.
The comic, created by Jim Starlin, was bimonthly, lasting 26 episodes under Epic, then was bought by First Comics, who carried it for 37 more issues.

Dreadstar (and Warlock before it) is perhaps the peak of Starlin's career, and at least the early volumes should not be missed by cosmic afficionados.

NEWSARAMA - JIM STARLIN: FATHER OF DREADSTAR
Dreadstar appeared, stole the stage, and found his way to Caldor, where, stumbling and injured, he was found by the cat-people (results of Instrumentality genetic engineering) that inhabited the world and quietly lived as farmers.
Dreadstar’s presence on the world attracted another seeker, Syzygy Darklock, a former high bishop in the Instrumentality who had left the church to take part in a quest that had led him to the reluctant hero.
Dreadstar resisted Darklock’s insistence that he was meant for greater things, and continued to live a pastoral existence as a farmer on Caldor with his wife and good friend, Oedi, a cat-man.

History: Born in the Milky Way Galaxy, Vanth Dreadstar proved to be able to access a great power, and was tricked into destroying his own galaxy.
Dreadstar first appeared in "Metamorphosis Odyssey", a story which ran in the first eight issues of Marvel Comics Epic Illustrated.
It was followed in Epic Comics' Dreadstar #1-26 and First Comics' Dreadstar #27-30, with a story about the war against a High Papal and his church of super-villains.

In Not My So Humble Opinion.
Plan M represents the first six issues of the ongoing Dreadstar series that was published by Marvel's Epic Comics imprint in the mid-1980s.
The basic premise of Starlin's series was that Vanth Dreadstar, the last survivor of the destroyed Milky Way galaxy, found himself transported the Empirical Galaxy, where he was recruited by the unscrupulous sorcerer Syzygy Darklock to help bring an end to a two hundred year old war.
Starlin's work on Dreadstar was a sharp commentary on a number of contemporary societal and political issues: the mentality that led to the Vietnam War, the excesses of unrestrained capitalism, the dangers of fanaticism, and the abuse of religious authority to cultivate power.

World Famous Comics: Dreadstar Volume 2: The Price
This volume is concerned with two main stories: the origin of Syzygy, the horrifically scarred and powerful sorceror who later aids Vanth, and Vanth himself as he begins the second Act of his life: the appalling violence of the galactic Monarchy/Instrumentality war, brutally brought home to him in the most graphic way imaginable.
Batman and Spiderman were wonderful when I was a child, but as a teenager in the '80s I embraced Dreadstar since it was far more complex and nuanced than any typical superhero comic of its time.
Dreadstar Volume Two: The Price suffers from the same sins of excess as Volume One did: It's overwritten and cluttered with things that, in the end, aren't necessary.

I'm a big fan of Jim Starlin, and I have fond memories of reading the Dreadstar series when I was a young teen.
Vanth Dreadstar himself is an obnoxious creep, so there is NO ONE to feel for in this book.....all you can do is be dragged along for a quest that takes Millions of years to complete, and then is rendered completely moot at the end.

Rather than turning on their prospective conquerors, the Urthlings instead blame Dreadstar, et al, for the appearance of the mouthpieces of the Franchise, and therefore opt to pelt them with a variety of handy garden produce, preliminary to the likely lynching of the scapegoats inheriting the blame for their upcoming misery.
However, Dreadstar, in whatever incarnation, never particularly favored diplomatic approaches to troglodytic problems, and therefore launches an assault upon the invaders.
