The word 'Dreamland' is a bit misleading and although we should be grateful that so many Galloper sets still exist in England thanks to dedicated owners and enthusiasts the fact remains that the great British seaside amusement parks are not what they used to be.
Dreamland is no different these days from anywhere else - expensive, atmosphere free and in need of a little TLC - a far cry from the golden days before the aeroplane changed holiday habits for good.
Following a name change back to Dreamland the park was purchased by showman Jimmy Godden in 1995, with the help of an EU grant.

Dreamland users and former employees have been expressing their sadness at the end of an era for the Kent seaside resort.
When the Scenic Railway was given listed status in March 2002, then Dreamland owner Jim Godden told the BBC he was delighted at the prospect of its status widening the scope for future restoration.
And in October they drew attention to figures compiled by Visit Britain, which showed Dreamland was the fifth most visited free theme park in the UK during 2002, claiming they showed the attraction was still popular enough to stay open.

Dreamland should be open, after all thats what everyone went to Margate for.
I am really sorry that Dreamland is going but I hope somebody who remembers good family holidays will make there mark by puttin it back to it's former glory and lets hope that someone can do the same for it neigbouring town's too.
Dreamland is the one thing thing that brought families to margate and without that it will be forgot just in the same way Ramsgate has been when they closed the rides there.

 Press Release (Save Dreamland Campaign presents its vision for a new Dreamland -- 'I Dream of Dreamland')
The Vision for Dreamland is backed by Philip Miller, Managing Director of Southend's popular Adventure Island theme park, which attracts 1.5 million visitors a year.
The Save Dreamland Campaign will be formally issuing the new Concept Plan to Thanet District Council as a submission to the current Local Development Framework consultation.
Margate's residents and businesses are fed up of the uncertainty that this council has created for the resort.

Having been born and raised in Margate I have long since come to realise that the names Dreamland and Emin are synonymous with the town.
As we enter Dreamland, Emin starts blurting out memories, pointing to the place where the zoo used to be, the helter-skelter she replicated for an artwork and the space that The Sphinx funhouse, her favourite attraction, once occupied.
She recently took on the mantle of co-ordinator for the Save Dreamland Campaign, reasoning that its death would have a drastic effect on the grotto and other attractions, such as the nearby Margate Caves.

It is under the same ownership as the Rotunda park in Folkestone, part of which is already being demolished to make way for shops, flats and indoor leisure facilities.
Owner Jim Godden said Dreamland would probably have to go much the same way and is considering replacing the rides with shops and indoor leisure facilities.
Opening on 3rd July 1920 the ride is the oldest operating roller coaster in the country.

The question starts with the clause "When a high quality development is secured for the Dreamland site..." From the wording of this question, it seems that the decision has already been made and our views don't matter.
Despite the fact that the retention of the Scenic Railway in an amusement park is one of the options considered in the report, it has been inexplicably excluded from the Questionnaire.
And if you know other people who want to see Dreamland and the Scenic Railway saved (and who might be as disappointed as we are with this ill-informed, poorly researched document), please tell them about this consultation.

I was recently in Margate and it was for a walk back through time for me, to see places I used to love to go to as a kid and a teenager.
Margate was always the place to go for a good family day out with the children.
Dreamland itself is a mass of depressing concrete.

Margate Mayor Thomas Dalby Reeve bought the site for £3,750, including an uncommissioned railway embankment and adjoining allotments.
In 1895 a victorian strongman, known as 'Margate's Strongest Man' met a girl in the rink and she promised him a 'good time' outside.
The rink was connected to the gardens by a tunnel and it was there that the girl informed the man she had changed her mind.

Dreamland was a huge part of my childhood in Margate.
It was, of course, the ideal place for first dates, though by the time I was interested in girls Dreamland had briefly changed its name to Bembom Brothers and become a "theme park" (though no one knew what the theme was) which charged for admission rather than for each ride.
For a pre-teen boy this was more of a challenge than a hindrance; paths to holes in the fence soon became well worn, and I discovered that one paid-for inky hand-stamp could be transferred on to the hands of at least three friends.

The Save Dreamland Campaign is marking the last weekend of Dreamland with a special evening event at the Scenic Railway, the park’s Grade II listed wooden roller coaster, and large numbers of campaigners are expected to attend.
Dreamland closed for what as thought to be the last time in October 2003, but it won a brief reprieve for eight weeks in 2004, when showman David Wallis stepped in to operate the park for the summer 2004 season.
Of course, it is sad to see the park close, but we are confident that one of the theme park operators that want to acquire Dreamland will eventually succeed in their bid, and there will be a bigger and better Dreamland in the near future.

Dreamland's roots go back over 100 years and I don't see why one or two people should suddenly destroy it for the sake of money.
Having a clause in the policy that allows for Dreamland’s redevelopment if the amusement park is not viable means that there is no incentive for the owner to invest the very large sums of money required for a permanent amusement park.

The park is due to stay open during the summer season of 2005, but Mr Hunter said the company envisaged submitting a planning application for the site in 2006 with development earmarked for 2007.
The Save Dreamland Campaign members have called for Thanet District Council to rule the site has to remain as an amusement park and said they would be giving copies of their new plan to the council for consideration.

I was under the impression that Dreamland would be similar to Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach, in that it would be located right on the beach.
However, Dreamland proved to be a little harder to locate, since it was a block or two inland, and was somewhat hidden by other buildings.
Margate's version consisted of a lift hill, followed by an out-and-back ride.

For anyone looking for information on the re-opening of Margate's Dreamland amusement park, the opening date is set for Saturday May 21st and the new owner, Harry Ayers, is introducing 15 more rides for the summer season.
All the Dreamland rides will be token-based as before and prices are expected to be £10 for 20 tokens or £20 for 45 tokens.
We'll be sending our own Childrens' editor Charlotte, around the resurrected Dreamland with her digital camera for a photographic review of the rides.

“Dreamland at Margate is a central part of our funfair and amusement heritage; it is a place where there has always been the great mix of traditional and innovative attractions in its long history.
While the park is not the only entertainment within Margate its closing would certainly effect the frequency of my visits to the town; with two young sons I would be forced to consider other day-trip/weekend destinations where a more varied range of entertainments would be available.
Margate was the best place to go to as it has easy links by train, the station is almost on the superb beach and there was Dreamland.

dreamland was always great when i was a kid always wanted to go but mum and dad said no most of the time and the queues used to be rediculous.

Margate, United Kingdom -- The Save Dreamland Campaign and the Scenic Railway Trust are pleased to jointly announce that the 83-year-old Scenic Railway roller coaster at Margate's Dreamland Pleasure Park will open to the public on Saturday, May 24, 2003 for what could be its last summer season.
Dreamland opened for the 2003 season on 12 April, under the auspices of leading showman David Wallis, who has revamped the park and added some exciting new rides.
The history of the Scenic Railway is being celebrated in a special event at Margate's historic Theatre Royal on June 1.
