  Dreams
A person's dreams may be of interest only to the dreamer, and this is the only script Kurosawa wrote without collaborators.
Dreams explores a lifetime of the 80- year old director's dreams, from shimmering childhood ones to those of a rueful, but hopeful, old age.
He accidentally saw an ad in the newspaper: a movie studio was looking for assistant directors; perhaps that was a way to end his financial dependence on his parents.

 Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (1990)
The director claims that these sequences were actually dreams that he personally experienced over the years and then turned them into a poetic screenplay that doesn’t really run so much as a story as it does as hauntingly beautiful and loosely related interstitials.
In these episodes, we meet I as a little boy and we are able to catch a glimpse of the director’s love for nature and the environment, as well as how he sees mankind connecting with them and it’s all vividly brought to life with stunning and spectacular imagery.
Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams is the perfect package — an incredible mix of stunning imagery and atmospheric effects and in my opinion, a film that literally screams for a 5.1 mix with its multiple atmospheric elements that are simply too numerous to mention.

As the waking dream continued, its theme and mood had clear parallels to the long-standing emotional drought in the patient's marriage and the "fork in the road" he had come to in his life.
The dream content seemed to provide her an emotional, experiential affirmation that it would be worth the risk of being more fully open in her current relationship, beyond what any cognitive rationalization alone could provide.
If a man had a dream about rowing a boat across a lake to an island, Perls might have the man speak as if he were the lake, the rowboat, the island, etc. His questions would be designed to draw out the symbolism or function of these aspects of the dream imagery.

Dreams — aka Akira Kurosawa's Dreams, Yume (夢), I Saw a Dream Like This, Konna yume wo mita, or Such Dreams I Have Dreamed — is a 1990 portmanteau film based on actual dreams of the film's director, Akira Kurosawa at different stages of his life.
In this first dream, a boy defies the wish of a woman, possibly his mother, to remain at home during a day with such weather.
From behind a large tree in the nearby forest, he is witness to the slow wedding procession of the kitsune.

The second half of "Dreams" is weak: the fifth episode, "Crows," about a fantasy encounter with van Gogh, is a thin conceit; and the remaining three segments are all static, self-conscious, and didactic.
For someone to proclaim "Dreams" as merely propaganda is no more than just a way for that person to insert his own comment to pay no attention to the artistic value of the film.
That nation's largest director making a movie expressing his regrets in life through the depiction of nuclear war, or just war, makes sense as the feelings of an 80-year-old Kurosawa who expresses a retrospect on main landmarks of his own life.

While many of the middle sequences are eerie and surreal, the first two films and the finale ("Sunshine Through the Rain," "The Peach Orchard," and "Village of the Watermills") are gorgeously lush and serene.
