In this respect, Dreamtime was more like a second album, with bits of an imaginary debut thrown in to maintain the continuity.
The Dreamtime era coincided with a new sense of purpose in the Cult camp.
Dreamtime was a two-fingered salute to anyone who ever doubted the potential of Astbury and Duffy's songwriting partnership.

 Dreamtime Return
Ten years later, DREAMTIME RETURN has firmly proved to be a classic recording, according to the countless testimonies of fans, radio programmers and reviewers worldwide.
It was these explorations through the Aborigine myth of The Dreamtime, their highly complex story of creation, that inspired this recording.
DREAMTIME RETURN captures the intense, creative passion that is at the heart of The Dreamtime, blending Roach's distinct musical styles -- meditative / contemplative and high-energy -- for an unforgettable 127 minutes of powerful musical images of the mystical dawn of life.

Indeed, goth is still stalking the band's efforts whether the members liked it or not: consider "83rd Dream" and its distinctly creeped-out introduction, Astbury's vocals fed through extra effects.
If there's not as much in the way of blunt power chording as later, Dreamtime is still loaded with a variety of moody, energetic joys.
Later CD versions of the album included two reasonable enough tracks, the vaguely bluesy (and slightly silly) "Bonebag" and the dreamy "Sea and Sky," plus one total smash.

Tracing their evolution from 'Resurrection Joe' and the "Dreamtime" album to 'The Witch', "The Cult" album and the final, US-only, single, 'In the Clouds'.
Ironically, while "Love" is often regarded as their best album, two of the tracks, 'Revolution' and 'Rain' sound hopelessly dated and more than a bit naff.
The rest of the compilation is made up of early stuff from the "Dreamtime" era that show a band that had perfected the sound of the rocker part of the Goth scene - rhythm driven powerhouses that have yet to be bettered, and the later stuff.

As a result, there are few surprises on this album, in terms of its choice of songs and their journeyman renditions.
Though they are veterans of the British punk explosion that created the Sex Pistols and the Clash, the Stranglers must have decided at some point that they wanted to become more than a punk band, a band that was primitively polyrhythmic yet urbanely artistic, sort of like Talking Heads.
The Stranglers have the synthesized textures and technical polish of Ultravox or the Human League, but they lack those bands' ability to give their songs the pop melodies and hooks that keep listeners from forgetting the songs immediately after hearing them.

The disc is partly a soundtrack to a documentary (on aboriginal rock art) called The Art of the Dreamtime, directed by David Stahl.
He was aware of the dangers of making new age kitsch, of producing an ethnological forgery of sampled sounds or putting didjeridus in space reverb.
In 1987 he produced Western Spaces, an album of synthesized solos, duos, and trios with Kevin Braheny and Richard Burmer.

While the rest of the album has some moments, the bad news is that most of the rest of the album doesn't live up to this song.
The best song on the album is "Only A Vision." It's good that it was not chosen as a single, it never would have gotten any attention, but wow, what a great tune.

Although the album came out in the days of turntables and LPs, the advent of the CD now allows the listener to program one track, or an entire disc, to play in "repeat" mode.
Epic in the sense that the rhythms are measured in minutes rather than measures (his Sleep Concerts measured the cycles in hours), and the whole of the six, roughly half-hour pieces might only be appreciated when played by themselves, in the background.
Though the album has a definite progression (and includes some remarkable work by each of the contributors), as an ambient work it comes closest to recreating a parallel environment.

Depending on your viewpoint, 1986's Dreamtime--the ninth and penultimate album from the original Stranglers line-up and the second to feature their not-always-necessary auxiliary brass section--is either an unfocused and overly-variant under-achievement or a case of a few good pop songs and a smorgasbord of half-baked ideas hinting at potential future musical directions.
After several years of risky experimentation in the aftermath of punk, the Stranglers gradually mellowed, the culmination of this maturation being "Dreamtime".
The album opens with the classic "Always The Sun", a beautiful, haunting tune, inspired by JJ Burnel's interest in Zen Buddhism - the song is still performed live by the band today.
