The studio was officially founded in October of 1994 with financial backing of $33 million from each of the three main partners and $500 million from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
DreamWorks Records never lived up to expectations, and was sold in October 2003 to Universal Music Group, which operated the label as DreamWorks Nashville.
Eight films with Universal Studios: Small Soldiers, Gladiator, Meet the Parents, A Beautiful Mind, Seabiscuit, The Cat in the Hat, Meet the Fockers and Munich were made by DreamWorks and Universal and released in 1998 and between 2000-2005.

But shares of DreamWorks (Research) lost $2.80, or 7 percent, to $37.40 in after-hours trading Wednesday, when the company announced that it had pushed back the release of "Shrek 3" to May 2007 from November 2006.
The news came one day after DreamWorks' chief rival, Pixar Animation Studios (Research), said it also would delay the release of its next computer animation, "Cars." Originally scheduled for Nov. 2005 and jointly produced with The Walt Disney Co., "Cars" will now debut in U.S. theaters in June 2006.
As for financial results, DreamWorks said third-quarter earnings were adjusted to reflect a provision of $7.9 million for income taxes, which the company would have paid had its separation from parent DreamWorks Studios been completed by the end of its third quarter on Sept. 30.

As previously announced, the new agreement was contingent on the closing of Paramount's acquisition of the company's previous distribution partner, DreamWorks Studios.
As disclosed in last month's announcement, Paramount Pictures will be responsible for the marketing and distribution of DreamWorks Animation films and will earn the same 8% distribution fee that had previously been paid to DreamWorks Studios.
The new agreement with Paramount expires by the end of 2012, which is two years longer than the original distribution deal with DreamWorks Studios.
