Robert Dreghorn of Ruchill as a typical Scot   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Dreghorn had invited a party of gentlemen to dinner, and on this occasion he was anxious to get a turkey for his head dish—turkeys being rather rare birds in Glasgow in those days.
Dreghorn, with his usual whistle, turned about on his heel and unceremoniously marched of without understanding a word of the scholastic gentlemen’s learned puns.
Dreghorn, when conversing with his acquaintances upon our streets, had a peculiar manner of abruptly leaving them, by giving a droll sort of whistle, turning round upon his heel, and then quickly moving on without bidding them adieu.

 Dreghorn Castle
Amongst the missing crown charters of Robert 11, was one confirming a lease of the barony of Redhall in the shire of Edinburgh, " except Dreghorn and Woodhall " by Alexander Meyaners of Woodhall, to the Earl of Fife and Monteith.
Dreghorn Castle was one of Colinton's grandest houses, probably built originally by Sir William Murray, Master of Works to King Charles II (1630-1685).
In 1797 Dreghorn Castle was bought by Alexander Trotter, paymaster to the Royal Navy, and remained in the possession of the Trotters for three generations.

Like his son after him, he is commonly designated "wright in Glasgow." But trade was not so subdivided then as now, and the Dreghorns were both wrights and plumbers, and were extensive timber and lead merchants as well, and, whether or not reckoned of the merchant rank, they were citizens of credit and renown.
Allan Dreghorn married Bessie Bogle, daughter of Robert Bogle third of Shettleston and Jean Carlyle, but he had no children, and, under certain provisions for "Lady Ruchill" (who survived till 1767), he left as his heir his nephew, Robert III., the only son of Robert I.'s younger son.
And from the Bridgegate his neighbour, Allan Dreghorn, followed him to Clydeside, and between the "stately house of curious workmanship" and "the town's great and magnificent hospital" built the fine old mansion which has outlived them both.

Dreghorn Parish Church, like St Martin's Church, Stoney Middleton, is octagonal in shape.
It was built in 1780 for the Montgomeries of Eglinton, under the direction of the 11th Earl, Archibald.
As will be seen, its church appeared 10 years after Dreghorn Church, but was built to a similar octagonal plan - although it has since been remodeled so no longer retains its original shape.

In this novella, Henry Rathbone, better known to readers of Perry's William Monk series, joins a Christmas gathering of the Dreghorn family at their beautiful country estate in the English Lake District. The year is 1850, and the countryside is blanketed with snow.
The Dreghorn brothers had spread to the far corners of the earth, and this was planned to be a happy reunion after ten years of separation.
Rathbone, however, knows this is not to be. Antonia Dreghorn, Rathbone's godchild, had contacted him in London to tell him her husband Judah, the oldest brother and head of the family, was dead, victim of a stupid accident.
