Dreidel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A dreidel (also spelled draydl, dreydel, dreydl, or dreidl, and Sevivon in Hebrew) is a four-sided top, played with during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.
A specific sort of dreidel is the braille dreidel, where the above mentioned letters are replaced by braille symbols.
An example of the braille dreidel is the dreidel in the picture, which was made by artist Marsha Plafkin and is included the permanent collection of the Skirball Museum in Los Angeles and the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the origin of the game of "Dreidel" is the "Teetotum" (drawing at the left), a gambling top that was known in ancient Greece and the Hashemonean kingdom.
In Germany in the 16th century, under the name "Kreisel" (to spin), the Dreidel evolved as a device to be used during the Hanukkah Festival - the Jewish festival commemorating the event that happened in Jerusalem in the year 165 BC.
Pictured to the left is a modern plastic Dreidel, although ones made of wood, silver, ivory, and other materials exist throughout the world.

Question 5.6: What are the origins of the Chanukah Dreidel?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Answer: Both dreidel and grogger are traditional European toys, although the names they go by in non-Jewish cultures are quite different from the ones we use.
It turns out to be an ancient gambling toy, known in ancient Greece, and with national variations on the letters on the faces of the toy.
They didn't ban the dreidel, though, perhaps because the "A great miracle happened there" interpretation of the letters allowed the dreidel to escape their wrath.
