Battle of Drepana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The battle of Drepana or Drepanum (offshore modern Trapani, western coast of Sicily, 249 BC) was a naval battle between the fleets of Carthage and the Roman Republic, fought during the First Punic War.
In the night, Hannibal left the city carrying the useless cavalry horses and ran to the harbour of Drepana, before the Romans knew what was happening.
When they reached Drepana at sunrise, the fleet was scattered in a long, disorganised line with Pulcher's ship in the rear.

Battle of Drepanum - 249 BC Battle of Drepanum (Drepana) - 249 BC In 249 BC, one of the current consuls, Publius Claudius Pulcher, son of the man who had started the war fifteen years earlier, set out with 10,000 fresh men to augment the crews and 123 ships to surprise Adherbal.
Claudius Pulcher, who--in the words of Polybius: "owing to his predilections as a drill-master"--positioned himself at the rear of the Roman fleet advancing towards the harbor of Drepana "in order to hustle laggards".
Hoping to surprise the Carthaginian fleet there, Pulcher lost all capacity to "lead" his ships with the result that he was unable to react to events as they unfolded.

 Hamilcar Barca
At the beginning of the 240's, the Romans had started to besiege Lilybaeum and Drepana (modern Marsala and Trapani), which, however, could be reinforced by the Carthaginians, who still were powerful at sea and employed blockade-runners.
The other consul, Lucius Junius Pullus, lost his navy in a tempest, but was able to occupy Mount Eryx, east of Drepana, which meant that the two ports were cut off from the rest of the island.
In 244, he suddenly attacked the Roman fortifications on Mount Eryx, and occupied a part of it, but was unable to raise the siege of nearby Drepana.

Roman to Julian Conversion: AUC 512 = 242 BC
Roman to Julian Conversion: AUC 512 = 242 BC Polybius 1.59.8 notes that a consul for this year, Q. Lutatius Catulus, took command of the Roman fleet at the beginning of summer, i.e.
May. Sometime thereafter, after putting Drepana (Trapani) under siege, he defeated the fleet that the Carthaginians had assembled in the meantime to relieve the city at the battle of the Aegates Insulae, the concluding battle of the first Punic War.
is to suppose that Catulus negotiated with a deputation from Drepana rather than Carthage itself, and that the final negotiations were actually concluded in the next year.

Roman to Julian Conversion: AUC 505 = 249 BC
Claudius Pulcher, set out for Sicily by marching a naval force to the straights of Messina, transporting them to Sicily, and marching along the coast to Drepana (Polybius 1.49).
He then manned the fleet, tossed the sacred chickens overboard for not giving the appropriate omen of victory, and attacked the Carthaginian fleet at Drepana, where he was decisively defeated, just as the chooks had predicted he would be.
Since he must have left Rome a few weeks after the start of his consulate at the earliest, the battle can't have taken place any sooner than two months after the start of his consulate.

Yet another rebuilt fleet and armies laid siege to Drepana and Lilybaeum, the latter the major Carthaginian supply base left in Sicily.
The Roman fleet once again suffered disaster in 249 B.C. An attempted surprise naval attack on Drepana was discovered by the Carthaginians, who managed to get their fleet to sea and catch the disorganized Romans between them and the shore.
In 247 B.C. the Carthaginian leader Hamilcar Barca arrived and though he did not have the forces to break the sieges of Drepana and Lilybaeum, held the Romans off for the rest of the war.

For the Romans this was more than an humiliation: it was annulling the whole effect of the siege, since the garrison was being fed and kept in contact with Carthage.
The clumsy approach was seen by the Punic scouts and the surprise effect lost.
Carthage's ships thus sailed out of Drepana, passing south of the city and contoured two small islands in the coast to open ocean.

The Romans had reformed their system of shipbuilding and had also put ashore all heavy material except what was required for the battle; their crews rendered excellent service, as their training had got them well together, and the marines they had were men selected from the army for their steadfastness.
