Dressy Bessy - PopMatters Concert Review
Dressy Bessy's new studio album doesn't come out until the end of August but it's already a hit -- at least with the crowd at the foursome's Chicago tour stop, who got a preview of the upcoming self-titled effort during a nearly nonstop performance Saturday night.
On its previous recordings, Dressy Bessy's sound was dominated by guitar fuzz, but on the new album and in the live setting Ealom and John Hill (also of Apples in Stereo) play cleaner and more simply, allowing the power of the rhythm section of Rob Greene (bass) and Darren Albert (drums) to come through.
Dressy Bessy's set was a model of friendly economy and simplicity, much like the refrigerator magnets for sale at its merchandise table, which Ealom made by decoupaging Little Music artwork onto wood blocks she cut herself.

slant // magazine.com: Music Review - Dressy Bessy: Electrified
Dressy Bessy hasn't abandoned mod (Electrified's color-saturated packaging makes that abundantly clear even before the album begins), but the greater variety of song styles tackled on the album no longer confine the band's sound or tie them too tightly to a gimmick.
Ealom's low-affect delivery is a perfect fit with the band's hip remove, so when she breaks form to emphasize a particular phrase—"You think you've fallen in love once/So what the hell are we doing?" on "Small," for instance—it's all the more effective, as potent as the power chords supporting her.
Considering the growth Dressy Bessy has shown since their last outing, though, that may not be a point of concern for long.

Dressy Bessy is a band that came to life about 30 years too late, and not because of its mid-’60s lime-green-and-tangerine fashion sensibilities or even its retro-stacked sound that blends a tenuous link to the Elephant Six collective with a mod-tastic twist on indie pop.
Dressy Bessy is just as cute, precocious and lovable as it was on its previous self-titled affair (2003, Kindercore).
Keeping the distortion turned up on its guitars, Dressy Bessy keeps its last album’s kick high on its list of priorities, which helps the band keep from sounding too much like a cartoon twist on the style, though Ealom’s syrupy delivery keeps the grind of distortion from becoming too rock.
