Drift Drift is the slow long term variation of an attribute or value of a system or device.
Drift ice Drift ice consists of slabs of ice that float on the surface of the water in cold regions.
Polar drift Polar drift is a geological phenomenon caused by variations in the flow of molten north pole.

Sea ice drift models are based on the observation that sea ice tends to drift at an angle to the geostrophic wind direction and at a fraction of the geostrophic wind speed.
Sea ice drift is computed for all 207 of the Skiles points and for points along the NIC analysis of the ice edge.
The operational Skiles sea ice drift forecasts are sent daily to the weather forecast offices in Anchorage and Fairbanks on a dedicated circuit, the NIC, and a Fleet Weather and Oceanography Facility at Keflavik, Iceland.

Description of the Chicago District - Pleistocene
The shape of the pebbles and bowlders of the unstratified drift is not that of streams or shore pebbles.
The ice creeps out in all directions from the interior until it reaches the sea, where great masses become detached and float away as icebergs, or until it reaches territory where the climate is such as to waste the ice by melting and evaporation as rapidly as it advances.
From this arrangement of the drift in the ice sheet it also results that, on the final retreat of the ice front from the area, the englacial material, being highest up in the ice, is left upon the surface.

English-Russian glossary of the sea-ice terms arranged by subject
The principal kinds of floating ice are lake ice, river ice, and sea ice which form by the freezing of water at the surface, and glacier ice (ice of land origin) formed on land or in an ice shelf.
Fast ice may be formed in situ from sea water or by freezing of floating ice of any age to the shore, and it may extend a few metres or several hundred kilometres from the coast.
Ice cover: The ratio of an area of ice of any concentration to the total area of sea surface within some large geographic local; this local may be global, hemispheric, or prescribed by a specific oceanographic entity such as Baffin Bay or the Barents Sea.

 Problems in the Glacial Theory
In considering the layer of drift and its origin, the basic assumption in the glacial theory is that material was formed by ice-sheets, and that rocks and stones from various places were ground up by the movement of the ice, transported in its lower parts and redeposited when the ice-sheets melted.
The sand in which the stones of the drift are often embedded is explained in the glacial theory as originating in the environment of the melting of the ice at the end of the ice ages.
The layers of drift in the vicinity of eskers also appear to be continuous with the material in eskers, indicating that eskers and the drift of the region are of the same age.

International Ice Patrol   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Ice Patrol used vector addition of the effects of the wind and sea current on icebergs to predict their motion.
Ice Patrol conducted hydrographic surveys in the vicinity of the Grand Banks beginning shortly after the inception of Ice Patrol and developed geostrophic current data using the methods described in Sverdrup, et al., 1942.
The temperature of the ice surface was chosen as -1 degrees C. This temperature is above the equilibrium temperature of ice and sea water at 30 parts per thousand salinity of -1.63 degrees C. An ice surface temperature of -1 degrees C will be used throughout the model.

Due to the low stability of the water column of the Southern Ocean, the amount of melted ice, although still subject to big uncertainties, might be crucial for the onset of deep convection and water mass formation.

The Elements of Geology - CHAPTER XXII - THE QUATERNARY
The boundary of the drift is equally independent of the relief of the land, crossing hills and plains impartially, unlike water-laid deposits, whose margins, unless subsequently deformed, are horizontal.
In the presence of these glaciated surfaces we cannot doubt that the area of the drift has been overridden by vast sheets of ice which, in their steady flow, rasped and scored the rock bed beneath by means of the stones with which their basal layers were inset, and in places plucked and shattered it.
The pebbles and bowlders of the drift are in part stream gravels, bowlders of weathering, and other coarse rock waste picked up from the surface of the country by the advancing ice, and in part are fragments plucked from ledges of sound rock after the mantle of waste had been removed.

The ice plug was frozen to the blue cable and was raised by lifting the mooring, cut into pieces with chainsaws and the debris dragged away.

Chapter VI. Was It Caused By Continental Ice-Sheets?
If the cold of the north caused the ice, and the ice caused the Drift, then in all the cold north-lands there must have been ice, and consequently there ought to have been Drift.
The northern drift of Russia and Germany; the åsar of Sweden; the kames, eskers, and erratics of Britain; and the iceberg-drift of Northern America have, apparently, no equivalent in Siberia.
If the verdure was covered with ice a mile in thickness, all animals that lived on vegetation of any kind must have perished; consequently, all carnivores which lived on these must have ceased to exist; and man himself, without animal or vegetable food, must have disappeared for ever.

5) in the drift phase, you must move the ship toward the DP marker half the distance (rounded down) in the shortest route.
This last move is similar to the old "Mayday" vectorial movement, and with this system the ship hold exactly the momentum acquired (and not used) from turn to turn.

In brief, the Drift is not found where ice must have been, and is found where ice could not have been; the conclusion, therefore, is irresistible that the Drift is not due to ice.
