It is similar to Rally racing on ice barn, but is done on a tarmac (paved course) and judged on speed, angle of attack, execution and style rather than just who finishes the fastest.
Because professional drifting events are judged on execution and style, it is mandatory that the judges are intimately familiar with the capabilities of the cars and the advanced driving techniques employed by the competitors.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer DRIFT for PlayStation 2 Review - PlayStation 2 Tokyo Xtreme Racer DRIFT Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
A decidedly Japanese-centric style of street racing, drift racing is the art of letting your car drift damn near sideways around sharp turns and corners, often for lengthy periods of time.
Especially in races against other cars, since they some how are immune to the slowdown you suffer when you hit a barrier or anything else for that matter, and as such, can simply blow right past you if you're anything but perfect in your drifting.
The racing is steadfastly dedicated to one esoteric brand of racing that, by itself, just isn't a whole lot of fun, and the game simply doesn't present itself well enough to make up for the gameplay's more annoying elements.

AskMen.com - Tokyo Xtreme Racer DRIFT review
The main problem is that the cars are almost always in one of three states: stuck firmly to the road, braking with the foot pedal and sliding a tad, or breaking with the emergency brake and sliding a lot.
Drifting is unfortunately absolutely necessary however, even in straight-up racing as the turning radius of every car in the game resembles that of a yacht.
Nearly every car is a rival, and race types aren't predefined so you don't really know what you're getting into, so it's hard to say, "I want to open this track, so I need to beat this and that driver." You're basically just racing to race, and if something opens up, so be it.

Here's a nice drifting video for those of you who have no clue what it is. Its pretty much a type of driving where instead of trying to get around the track in the least amount of time as possible, you do it by sliding around and collecting points for style.
I've always thought of drifting as an excuse for people who want to slide a car around but are too scared to drive fast enough to do it properly.
