Drill - LearnThis.Info Enclyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The twist drill is most common, consisting of a cylindrical metal rod with two helical "flutes" or grooves spiralling along its length.
The drill bit is held by the drill at one end, with the other end being pressed against the target material and rotated.
Oil-hole drilling can be used in a conventional drill press arrangement, but is more commonly seen in automatic drilling machinery in which it is the workpiece that rotates rather than the drill bit.

Drill Team's first album, Hope and Dream Explosion, reflects the recent trend of record companies signing any semi-skilled group in the hope that it will pay great dividends over the long run, although these groups' first few albums are terrible.
Drill Team's fundamental problems lie in its inability to write more than one riff that can sustain a song, so the result is that every song sounds almost exactly the same.
Another major fault inherent within Drill Team's songs are their simplicity and the group's unwillingness to take musical risks on tracks like "Bumble Bee" and "Stars Fly." Singer Jeff Watson's vocals are mediocre and often obscured by the simplistic guitar work.

 Noise Unit - Drill
After two albums with this line-up, Verhaeghen's involvement ceased, and Noise Unit became just another Leeb/Fulber side-project, one that sometimes seemed to be an alternative FLA, sometimes a more techno-oriented FLA, and sometimes just a dumping ground for FLA leftovers.
Drill is the first Noise Unit album that sounds as though it was conceived as such.
This track continues in that fine tradition, and is probably my favourite on the album, from the crunchy electronics of the opening to the choral effects, to the straightforward beat and wonderful melody.

In the years since that album was released most drill & bass that has been released has tended towards the IDM side of the fence -- artists like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher do good work, but in most cases miss the sheer ferocity that Empire brought to the table.
The album is alive with implications of dark, deviant sexuality -- chopped & screwed movie samples that undoubtedly sound far different in their original contexts than when suspended over crashing, staccato drum breaks.
Throughout the album, the specter of unpleasant, transgressive malevolence is continually present.

The bandmembers' solo endeavors during the early '80s proved crucial to Wire [+]'s new direction: the avant-pop sensibility developed by Newman on his albums and the experimental inclinations of Lewis and Gilbert were channeled into the nascent digital context in which the band was now working.

The album, his third, is treated to offbeat textural touches that reflect the edgy ambient approach of his co-producer, Joe Henry--electronic washes, horn charts, banjo, bebop trumpet.
As with his previous two albums, this one can't be neatly pegged into any particular genre, but somehow, the different styles of the songs fit together much like individual pieces of a mosaic, ultimately forming a beautiful picture.
The guest appearance of Aimee Mann perfectly sets the tone of the album with her typically sullen croon on the first track and the Barenaked Ladies don't seem out of place here either although the album is definitely closer to her solo work than theirs.

Bill first showed symptoms of drum'n'bass on the Noise Unit album Drill, with further signs of the infection on the FLA album Flavour Of The Weak.
They were only mild symptoms, it must be said, and I personally hoped he'd be able to resist the temptation, partly because he'd be much better off spending his time doing something that several million others weren't, partly because Leeb's mutant excursions into trendy dance genres have been a mixed bag.
The first Intermix album worked reasonably well, mixing early 90s dance music with the FLA aesthetic of the time.
